The ECNL scam?

Anonymous
We have a child that is starting out in travel soccer and we are trying to understand the various leagues and level of competitiveness. A few other parents were talking at a game and the sentiment was that that ECNL and ECNL RL for the boys side (they did not speak about girls) is a "scam." Their reasoning is that they they thought they required clubs to put all their age groups in the league. That means that mostly larger more established clubs are part of it while smaller clubs are left out. They mentioned how this sets up a racial divide because many of the older big clubs are run by a head coaching staff that is mostly white while the really good smaller clubs are run by coaches from many other countries. One parent said it might give the impression that these big league teams are better but when you look at tournament results the clubs that play in "lower" leagues are beating the ones in the "higher leagues." What say you?

Good god. Delete this thread already.

It sounds like the people you were talking to are just starting out too. Your post reminds me of that one time I was forced to watch The View.

I'll pass this along to my son's black ECNL coach and his three black teammates.

I mean, it is a ridiculously bad league for boys. They aren’t wrong about that.

My kids both love playing in ECNL. All of the coaches are white and we don’t have to deal with people from other countries. We always win unless we play against a club we’ve never heard of. 😊

People here might be making fun, but yes, ECNL discriminates against Hispanic clubs 100%

No more than CCL did in its heyday. Stupid post from people that know nothing.

I’m in California and this is a big issue here. ECNL has sidelined some of the extremely competitive but cash-poor clubs that used to compete from places like the Salinas Valley or the Central Valley. They were filled with talented players, and predominantly Latino. It used to be that these teams could play high-level competition even if the club was small and scrappy but between MLSNext and ECNL, these teams have been shut out of the high-level competitions in California. Their kids aren’t getting seen by college coaches the same way. It is really a shame and a loss to California soccer IMO.

I realize people are mocking OP because of how OP phrased her post, but there is truth to the underlying premise.

Unfortunately college, semipro and professional soccer is the same way. No small scrappy cash poor clubs in any of these competitions. Shame

My son is one of only two white kids an ECNL roster of 19 players. My other son is the only white kid on his MLSNext team.

These are U17 & U19 so I’ve been around awhile.

That doesn’t make what the PP wrote untrue.
