I heard a podcast with Sanjay Gupta about caffeine and it got me interested in giving up caffeine, to see what it was like without it. But I need a morning drink. Have you tried it and have a good drink other than smoothies that you found was a good substitute? |
I haven't given up coffee, but I imagine tea is the logical substitute. Even black tea has much less caffeine than coffee. (Espresso also has less caffeine than drip coffee, for that matter.) But if you wanted to go 100% caffeine-free you could do herbal tea.
What's so bad about caffeine (in moderation)? |
Hi OP- just wondering if you could summarize what he talked about re: caffeine? I know I should just listen to it but it’s 8:42 and I’m already feeling overwhelmed with my to do list for the day ![]() |
I was never a coffee drinker but when I go off caffeine (not currently; I have toddlers and am chronically sleep deprived), I drink decaf black tea (which does have caffeine but only small amounts that probably won’t register if you’re a habitual coffee drinker right now) or herbal tea, usually something with ginger in it. I have friends who like rooibos but it doesn’t work for me. If you like frothed milk kinds of caffeine drinks turmeric or ginseng or ginger lattes are really delicious too. I couldn’t do smoothies; I need something simple and hot first thing in the morning. |
I had to give up caffeine for a heart condition. Very very sad about it.
I drink herbal tea, not satisfying though. Now I'm working on developing a warm almond milk conoction that I will look forward to, especially now as we head into the cold months. That being said, coffee has plenty of good benefits, caffeine and all. Not sure why Gupta thinks it's bad. I will miss my coffee dearly. |
I haven't completely gone off coffee but I used to drink a pot a day - and now I make myself a blend of chicory (like 95 percent chicory) with just a little sprinkle of real coffee mixed in.
I do it in my drip coffee maker using these: https://www.amazon.com/Teeccino-Alternative-Caffeine-Substitute-Prebiotic/dp/B00DPEE2KC?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1 https://www.amazon.com/Puroast-Low-Acid-Coffee-Organic/dp/B001EXZ8DG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=YYY745GBIZK5&keywords=puroast&qid=1695260066&sprefix=puroast%2Caps%2C160&sr=8-1 |
After my last battle with Covid, coffee doesn't taste good anymore. Now I'm drinking green tea if I need a boost, or peppermint tea if I don't. |
Yes, op, enlighten us. Bonus if you can tell me how to stop drinking it. |
I'm a caffeine avoider (it just doesn't sit well with me) though I do enjoy a cup of decaf every so often. But my go-to morning drink is a cup of grapefruit juice with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (the kind with "the mother") in it. I know a lot of people avoid sugars and juice, but if you're looking for a drink that will feel like a ritual and that will awaken all your tastebuds, this is it. Plus there is some vague medicinal reason for the ACV, but I'm not sure what it is. lol |
Decaf tea.I like caffiene, so sometimes I'll have a caffinated cuppa, but mostly it is decaf. |
I might kiss you! These say low acid and I gave up coffee due to acid reflux. |

I am PP - and a kiss back. Reflux suuuucks. This hasn't cleared up entirely for me but it is MUCH better with the chicory/low acid coffee blend than it was even with the low acid coffee alone. I hope it helps you, too. |
Sorry i meant to answer you not OP. I'm not, not OP but I found this https://drsanjayguptacardiologist.com/blog/ca...-heart-the-low-down/ . Also, I'm the one who is stopping due to acid reflux. I also have read some research on anxiety and depression and caffeine in the am interrupts your normal dopamine release. You also get serotonin in the early afternoon which might make you sleepy, so a brisk walk or a nap is better than caffeine. |
I'm doing mushroom "coffee". 1 cup almond milk heated up 1 tbs mushroom coffee 1 tsp cacao 1/2 tst honey It's not coffee by any means but my acid reflux is gone and it's warm ... but again not coffee. |
