That is not true for college overall...there are plenty of schools that accept 90%+ of their students that offer engineering and CS. You are referencing only the selective schools.

I have read articles in the past about how in China and India...like 80%+ of their engineering and STEM graduates essentially graduated from the equivalent of Devry. These countries have hundreds of colleges that give kids the degree, but it is literally worthless.

There must be a typo in the article. It references that jobs requiring stronger Math will increase by 30,000 per year...in an economy that generates millions of jobs per year, that is next to nothing which seems off to me.

Colleges with open admission are not producing the engineers who drive the economy. Selective schools could double the size of engineering and CS departments and still reject qualified applicants

There are plenty of quality engineers coming out of schools like Michigan State, University of Iowa and 200+ other that are not open admission, but are also not highly rejective.

My main point is that the vast majority of the Chinese engineer/STEM grads are graduating from the equivalent of correspondence schools. Articles like this always just grab the headline.

We’re gutting gifted/accelerated programs in math in the name of equity. Completely suicidal behavior. Meanwhile, even in the roughest schools in DC, there’s a cadre of kids scoring at or above grade level in math, and they are apparently left to flounder until they can try for Banneker.

There are plenty of quality engineers coming out of schools like Michigan State, University of Iowa and 200+ other that are not open admission, but are also not highly rejective.

My main point is that the vast majority of the Chinese engineer/STEM grads are graduating from the equivalent of correspondence schools. Articles like this always just grab the headline.


The issue is we as a nation do not have enough Ph.D.s in STEM to teach these courses. There is no way to expand capacity especially at the top schools. Places like MIT, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Penn, Cornell in Math, Physics, CS and some engineering are relying on very strong undergraduate students as TAs to leverage the instructional network to de facto expand and now paying them very well do this. But, we simply need more Ph.D.s and financial incentives must be in place to accomplish this.

Citadel, Bridgewater, Jane Street are too seductive for the time being.

Fake GPAs, grade inflation.

Not teaching a strong foundation in math basics and pushing acceleration w/out mastery.

We pulled my kids off the crazy acceleration path in middle school. They had As but it was clear the algebra in middle school was inadequate.

Now kids don’t even have to show math proficiency on the SATs to get into college. Test optional.

Nowhere else in the world can you get into university without exams.

A lot of kids may be bad at math, but we do not have a dearth of CS majors. And you have to pass those math classes as part of your CS major.

China and Russia have 3x and 1.5x respectively the population as the US, so of course they will be graduating more students in STEM. Russia's economy is also crap, so even if they are graduating a lot of STEM majors, it sure isn't helping their country.

Russia's population is approximately 144M which is less than half of US population (340M) and yet they produce many many more engineers.

Stop using calculators in K-12 and before college.

Use textbooks to teach the subject, have a text book at home and one in classroom, have online lessons so that parents can watch it and reteach at home. American parents are so bad in Math that they cannot tutor their kids in Math.

Teach multiplication tables from 0 - 15 in grade 2. Rote learning has its place.

Teach STEM in the language that students know - English, Spanish etc. You are making immigrant kids from poorly educated and illiterate families dumb in Math because you are focussed on them learning the English language first.

Good for them and the great products those engineers are producing. If there is one thing I look for when making a purchasing decision, it's the Made in Russia stamp of quality
