US coronavirus cases top 10,000 and on the same or worse curve than Italy

This isn't going to improve until Trump is out of office and we can begin to change the culture so that people will actually take steps to mitigate the damage and spread.

Meanwhile New Zealand has gone 100 days without a single case of community spread

https://www.newsweek.com/coronavirus-cases-america-new-zealand-1523847

After reporting more than 56,000 coronavirus diagnoses on Saturday, the U.S. is close to hitting 5 million cases in over half a year into the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, New Zealand has marked its 100 days with no new cases.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. leads the world in coronavirus cases, at 4,998,105 of the total 19,648,084. The U.S. reported 56,174 cases on Saturday, down from the highs of more than 70,000 seen at several points in recent weeks. The U.S. is followed by Brazil which reached 3 million cases on Saturday, and India, which hit 2 million earlier this week.

The U.S. also has the highest death toll, with 162,425 out of the global total of 727,024. That is more than all the U.S. service members killed in the First World War. Brazil also precedes the U.S. in deaths, passing 100,000 on Saturday, with Mexico third at just over 52,000.

ZERO. Imagine what it might have been like here - how many lives could have been saved - if we'd had a real lockdown, real planning, real testing, real leadership, real contact tracing.

I feel so hopeless about this country. Just, living every day knowing the disease could come for my family next - yes, we have medically vulnerable people, who are doing their best to stay safe; but with the disease out of control here, you just have to accept the possibility that people you love most may get it and die. It's awful. It's criminal. It didn't have to be like this.

It's probably more like 190,000.

Try 200,700 excess deaths between March 15 and July 25. That's 40,000 more than the official death toll.

Gd, remember when this thread got started and 10k deaths sounded almost implausibly high?

I live in Florida. We're over 10k here alone. And going strong.

I think it is pretty clear at this point that the miracle coming to manage the pandemic will be the replacement of this corrupt and incompetent administration

I don't think it's the testing that's an issue:

https://www.mysuncoast.com/2020/07/19/concerns-arise-some-receive-positive-covid-results-never-got-tested/

People who sign up for testing then never get tested are being contacted by contact tracers and are being told they are positive. Friends of mine here got five of them together, signed up in DC, then didn't show. ALL FIVE got calls by contact tracers saying they tested positive
