I think what's funny about this is that I don't think Skyview's demographics are going to be much different than South Lakes |
And, they only had part of Floris. Some MC/UMC from Floris, but also multi family housing from Floris. |
How does this help Centreville's overcrowding? That's adding in a lot more then you are subtracting. |
No, but I definitely was giving it some deep, pensive thought though. |
Centreville is being renovated and expanded to hold 3000 students. Those changes help justify the renovation. |
But then you’re emptying out Fairfax HS. As long as FCPS is operating Fairfax, you can’t justify a monster expansion of Centreville that leaves Fairfax far under capacity. If FCPS is going to sever the relationship with the City of Fairfax, it’s a different situation, but that’s a big decision that won’t be made lightly. |
The renovation has not been approved due to land use issues. |
| And there is no possible way to financially justify building out CVHS to 3000 seats when Westfield has 800+ empty seats! |
They need to just renovate Centreville, there is no need for expansion. There are seats at Westfield. They can move students to Westfield. The idea that people get to throw a hissy fit about moving and get an expansion is ridiculous. They should be moving Centerville students to Westfield. |
It has nothing to do with demographics. Some people like IB, more people prefer AP, and most people don’t care. There are people who pupil place to SLHS for IB from Herndon, Westfield, Chantilly and other schools. Others pupil place out for AP. FMES goes to Carson for MS and then to SLHS barely knowing anyone. Most people from FMES want to move with the other schools to Skyview. Skyview is closer. Skyview will have AP. Hughes doesn’t have space for FMES so you can’t move FMES to Hughes so they can move with the other students to SLHS. |
Exactly. It’s too late to make any big changes now, or else fmes parents will be really mad and revolt. |
To be fair, I think Meren knows a good number of FMES families are not voting for her. I am thinking she is trying to position herself to the SLHS community saying she made her best effort but there wasn't anything that she could do. I think her approach is really to aim for a "phased in approach", at least that is what she posted on her FB topic. The current process is too fast, it is better for Skyview to be small and something then to set boundaries and move kids. In the past she has said she doesn't think the school should open next year. |
I hope that ship has sailed....... |
I would be shocked if it hasn't. They have the buidling, staff, teachers, and students. I think it is a go. I am not really sure what Meren thinks she is going to do to slow it down. |
As a Floris SLHS parent I would echo this. Our kids are split from the rest of Floris (probably less than a quarter now) after Carson and the transition is so hard. Skyview is half the distance than South Lakes is for us so that’s another plus. |
