Yes let’s get it straight. The nudes depicted in the comic are pictures of classical statues. Completely ridiculous.

Not appropriate:

The controversial assignment came to light when students were asked to read a passage from the "unapproved" book during class, which prompted concerns from parents. The specific text in question was a diary entry written by Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who documented her experiences hiding from Nazis in an attic in the German-occupied Netherlands during World War II. This passage contained explicit descriptions of male and female genitalia, according to reports reportedThe mother of twin brothers in the eighth-grade class, Amy Manuel, expressed her dismay, stating that her sons came home and disclosed that the teacher had made them read the sexually explicit passage aloud. Manuel said, "I mean it's bad enough she's having them read this for an assignment, but then she also is making them read it aloud and making a little girl talk about feeling each other's breasts and when she sees a female she goes into ecstasy, that's not OK."

I disagree. I think it’s fine. I remember reading Ethan Frome and talking about the significance and symbolism of the shriveled cucumber over the door. I think it was 9th grade. A 14 year old should be able to read an extremely tame passage about a peer having emotions and questions about their body.
Nothing graphic is depicted. The parent sheltering their little lamb from this material is raising a boy that can’t have a mature discussion about sex. And we wonder why boys have trouble with consent… it’s difficult to talk about consent, if discussing sex is so incredibly stigmatized.

Because they brought genitalia into the graphic novel

Sex ed brings up genitalia as well.

Guess what, we ALL have genitalia.

It has several descriptions of rape, incest, many violent murders (including one in the first chapter), is pro slavery, and espouses racial superiorities. Yet I can find it in nearly every library I go to. Disgusting.

Lol.

Laugh all you want! It also advocates genocide and has a horrific apocalyptic conclusion that gave my kids nightmares for months. I can't believe it was in a middle school library. It is repulsive and should be banned.

Was there a lot of smiting in it?

Someone once gave my kids an illustrated kid's bible and I decided to ban it from our home because it was way too violent. I mean every single story illustrated in it was horrible and not really child-friendly.

But I would never say that such a book should be pulled from the local library or school.

Nope. You’re nuts. There are thousands of books a teacher can choose that won’t make kids and parents uncomfortable. Your kids can read this at home.

You are not in the majority here. Most of us want kids that are well read. Great literature makes you think. It can absolutely make you uncomfortable. The history of slavery in this country is uncomfortable, and that’s ok. It’s ok for your little darling to feel uncomfortable. They might open their mind, they might become a critical thinker. They might become a better person, than the one your are raising them to be.

DP. Are you advocating for the written word to be treated the same as images? Because historically we treat them differently. And we label graphic works with age or maturity levels. These graphic novels would all be considered inappropriate for schools if they were a movie or video, fwiw.

Seeking comfort all the time will make you ill-prepared for the world.

Some of the best reading out there intends to discomfort you. You sound like someone who is not a great reader.

Why is a cartoon image worse than a textual description of the same thing? Can you articulate the reasons why you believe that to be the case?
