Can good parents just have an awful child?

Anonymous
I had a good friend whose daughter is truly evil. I don’t want to give too many details but of all the kids I have encountered over the years, this girl scares me. I don’t want her near my kids. I want to avoid her. This made me wonder how her always pleasant smiling parents must be at home.

The girl seems to enjoy when others get hurt. She had been the cause of many getting injured and I honestly feel my kids are unsafe around her. I have seen some of her dark art in passing and it is of tortured animals and death. Really dark stuff. I don’t know anyone like her and it is far beyond any typical mean girl behavior.

Can good parents just have an evil child?

Yes, it can happen.

The parents may not be providing the right help for the child. Good people don’t always make good parents, even with the best intentions.

Yes, mental illness exists, even in “good” families.

Torturing and killing animals is a red flag for sociopathy, no? Yes, mental illness can happen in any family, even with good parents. I'd keep your children away from her.

Yes, of course. I feel very badly for the parents who do try everything to help and they can’t because it’s beyond their control.

There was an article in The Atlantic about this: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/06/when-your-child-is-a-psychopath/524502/

And this one from the NY Times Magazine: https://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/13/magazine/can-you-call-a-9-year-old-a-psychopath.html

I think some kids are just born this way - their brains are wired differently. I really feel for the parents who are struggling with this. There isn't a whole lot of help or support out there for these kinds of kids.

The problem here is these sick and disturbed individuals don’t feel like what they’re doing is wrong. They’ll never stop. There’s only so much attempted treatment can do.

That’s the plot to We Need to talk about Kevin.

How many people have raised wife beaters as children?
How many people have raised animal abusers as children?
Maybe they all werent good parents, but it's not like millions of terrible people don't exist, some of them had to have had ok parents.

It could be due to DNA in the parent’s past. I’ve seen this in my own family.
