Here's the list of available dogs: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/dogs.html

Probably didn't even need to be said, but there is not ONE single dog available that's not a Pit mix. Not even a 17 year old Schnauzer in the rotation. :sigh:

yes you didn't need to say it. And who is hoping a 17 year old dog is in the shelter?

Not true. Quick glance shows there is a husky mix puppy and another dog who is some kind of terrier/chihuahua mix.

I had a hard time adopting a hamster from them. I had to have 2 appointments with them to meet with an adoption counselor. The whole process took 2 weeks. I can’t even imagine how long it takes to adopt a dog or cat. I hope they stream line the process.

I had a morning appt, was able to pick up our adopted cat later that same day.

That’s good to hear. I may have had an atypical experience.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to put social pressure on people to adopt or foster dogs, especially Pit mixes. I see so many people (mostly women) with rescue dogs that they cannot control and that they are in no way suited for. They are always very nice peole and I always feel bad for them. Don’t be that person.

But go get a rescue cat—those all seem fine.

I tired to adopt a dog from them several times. Each time they wanted me to fence my yard, which I told them will cost me thousands of dollars. They didn't budge.

I went out to West Virginia and rescued a dog on site. Arrived at the shelter and was driving home with the dog 2 hours later.

I fenced in my yard a year later, when i could afford to do so.

My wonderful boy is a pittie mix, got him at 4 years old.

I think it’s absolutely fine to require a fenced yard. It’s critical for dog safety.

Sorry OP. Breeders breed far faster than adopters can adopt.

This isn't a problem you can adapt your way out of.

Sorry, but I’m okay with all pitts and pitt mixes being put down. They can be super sweet but you never know which ones will snap unexpectedly. Not worth the risk imo.

Pup Tart and Hilly are pretty darn cute. I’m also intrigued by 8 yr old Shaka.

I wish I could help, we currently have a house full of pets though. I have adopted through them twice (dog and a guinea pig). Both experiences were good. Turn around time was 2-3 days if I remember correctly.

Vegan of 30 years here. I completely agree. I think it’s totally unfair how much of a priority animal shelters have become. It’s not a mess I think we should have to clean up.
