Jason Aldean - Try That In a Small Town

Anonymous
Disclaimer: I'm fully aware Jason Aldean / his wife have espoused problematic views in certain areas prior.

Anyways, I'm a big country music fan and I'm going back and forth over whether this song and the associated video are racist as many people claim. I think the biggest issue is that the music video was shot in front of a building in which a lynching took place, but the lyrics themselves don't seem racist...mostly about respecting the country and the flag, respecting your neighbors, wanting to keep your guns, etc. (which I realize is controversial, but not really racist).

Here's the video...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1_RKu-ESCY

Thoughts?

If it wasn’t intended to be racist, why not just admit it was a mistake to film where he filmed instead of doubling down?

You don’t think where the video was filmed + lyrics was an intentional stance?

Although I’d love to know what y’all are talking about, I’m not about to suffer through 3 minutes of a Jason Aldean song to find out - the internet.

It looks super racist to me as a southern white person. I'm sure it looks even more racist to black people.

I love country music, too. I think the fact that you sort have to squint and say, “ehhh, this isn’t the worst thing ever…” means it’s pretty freaking bad. At best, it’s a dogwhistle.

It's not racist against blacks. I watched the video because of all the twitter-outrage and suprise, surprise, not a single black person is shown in the crime footage. Of the people whose race/ethnicity is apparent, they are all greasy white "portland" types. The rest of the criminals are masked and their race/enthnicity is not known.

I was all geared up to pretend to be a MAGA dork and defend this song because I can’t stand this newfound idea that art, music, film, comedy, etc must reflect a certain set of values. Make all the racist videos you want.

But then I listened to the song. It’s just so irredeemably f$cking bad. And not the racial stuff. Just as a song. Not caping for this idiot.

Isn't being a racist POS kinda his whole personality?

It's sexist against men because most of the wankers in the protest/crime footage are men.

Love it!

It's so corny I laughed and couldn't believe it wasn't parody. But Aldean is free to make a song about crime in Democrat-controlled big cities, and even make it about blacks if he wanted to. But he didn't make it about blacks.

Well I do agree with him that we need to get a handle on crime and obviously robbing people, etc. is unacceptable! Not sure about the rest.

It’s laughably bad.

I’m from a small town in the Midwest that is DEEP RED and it has plenty of crime, mainly from the meth / heroin addict residents.

Aldean is a dumb puppet playing to his MAGA base.
