An interesting video on Metabolism

Anonymous
I am such a fan of this guy as someone who was obese for most of my life (although not morbidly obese as he was) and lost a chunk of weight (my AMA is here), I relate to so much of what he says and does in this video and others. And we've both maintained our natural weightloss for 10 years - beating the odds (but I'm at least a decade older ).

The gist of what he's saying: metabolism is not a fixed number, and you CAN increase your metabolism by exercising regularly. I have maintained that exercise for me was a big part of my weightloss and maintenance, and it allows me to eat a satisfying amount of calories every day - not just the calories burned via movement, but because exercise (cardio and strength training) INCREASES your metabolism at rest, so you burn more sitting on the sofa. I mean yeah, don't go totally overboard with what you eat, but you do NOT have to "diet" or restrict yourself, while you lose weight and keep it off. You don't need to run 10 miles a day every day or become a body builder - but DO challenge yourself and push past the discomfort. He and I are not magic and we're not anomalies, but I just wanted to share this to encourage people to move more, every day, going forward. It's great for you mentally, but is SO important for metabolism. And I'm a short middle aged female!

Video, and picture of him below:

I can't stand these fitness people who lose 20-100 pounds and try to monetize it. "I did it so I'm going to make a career out of it!"

Why do you hate it? And he lost 170lbs, according to Google. That's pretty phenomenal.

Exercise is crucial to health. It's the closest thing we have to a "miracle cure." For the vast majority of people, exercising more than they currently do would do more to improve their health than any other change they could make.

BUT:

1) For weight loss, diet changes are generally far more effective than exercise changes. (https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-minute-which-is-better-for-losing-weight-diet-or-exercise/)

2) Metabolism varies, but the differences among people is (again, generally) much smaller than the differences in diet and physical activity. And exercise might change your metabolism a bit, but it won't make a huge difference.

So yes, definitely exercise, but don't expect miracles.

Go to the Reddit group Progress Pics. Every other picture is someone who lost 100 pounds. It's phenomenal but doesn't make you an expert.

The fact that he lost and maintained it long term, would make him an expert in my book. Certainly a bigger expert than many doctors and other professionals. There are some major things you gain from experience, that you can't be taught even with copious amounts of school or training.

I don’t care that he lost weight. Experts have degrees, not an N=1 and a social media following.

Please do try to exercise some critical thinking. If you’re capable.

You should continue listening to people telling you can’t do anything. Especially experts. That’s a great plan for life in general.

I believe in evidence-based medicine. Did you also have a home birth?

DP. You think that losing a massive amount of weight and keeping it off long term, isn't "evidence based" science and knowledge? Wow. W. O. W.

Maybe you are the “at a population level” loser. Or not loser, since you cannot seem to fathom things in life are in your control, including weight loss.

Maybe just continue being a loser not loser waiting for some evidence based passive solution.

The scientific illiteracy never ceases to astound.

There is plenty of scientific literacy with posters around here. There is also an understanding that the average member of the studied populations is 1) not very bright and 2) lacking in a variety of self control. That’s just the human population generally anyways

Since you are so smart, how is it you are so far on the right of the informed and allegedly intelligent distribution yet so basic in your ability to maintain a healthy weight otherwise?

You know nothing about me or my weight but because you don’t have the evidence on your side, you retreat to insults.

If weight maintenance related to intelligence or self-control there would be no obese doctors. But there are many, because it does not.

DP. And yes of course there are lots of obese doctors and "experts." There are different kinds of intelligence, and dismissing people who've lost/maintained significant weightloss as "not experts" is a pretty immature and ignorant take. The people who've been there, know the struggles, and have been able to overcome them successfully? They have a direct expertise and knowledge that most doctors lack. But I think the dismissiveness comes more from envy, to be quite honest.
