| Long story short…DH and I are visiting his side of the family in the Midwest and he told them I was going to cook ‘something Asian’. I’m Asian and the dishes I cook I know aren’t going to go down well for the wife who is averse to anything spicy and lives on soda and fast food. I have never seen her eat anything that wasn’t a French fry or a fish stick and she doesn’t eat vegetables either so I am leaning towards just making a chicken teriyaki but was hoping DCUM would have some ideas? |
| Agree you need to play it safe. Stick with chicken teriyaki. |
|
Just make a less spicy version of whatever you would normally make.
-grew up in very white bread Midwestern family |

Sweet and sour chicken with rice. Omit the chilies. Done and done. If she doesn’t like it she can just eat the rice.
Egg rolls for side. |
| Well, if she likes fried food fried rice, eggrolls, wontons, and fried chicken Asian style. |
|
Pork dumplings and rice.
Beef and broccoli (she doesn't have to eat the broccoli). Fried rice |
| There are many countries and cuisines across Asia. Some are spicy, others are fairly bland. In your case, some kind of plain marinated chicken served on rice should be fine. |
| Japanese food isn't generally spicy. Teriyaki, chicken katsu, miso soup, ramen, udon noodles, etc., should be pretty accessible. |
Can you share a recipe for fried rice and cooking techniques for us? Mine never tastes like restaurant fried rice.
|
If you want it to taste like restaurant fried rice, add more fat and salt. A lot more. |
| What type of Asian? That’s a very broad category. |
| I don't get the idea of this. You are visiting them in their home and you've decided to cook something you think they won't like in their kitchen? Why not just cook what you think will be appealing to most and then add a side dish or two that you think you do well in whatever Asian style you want? It doesn't sound like they have asked for you to prepare an Asian meal for them. |

This is the “Pioneer Woman’s” butter chicken. I lived in rural Ohio near my grandparents farm for several years, and this was my grandmother’s favorite. |
| Chicken teriyaki or beef broccoli |
| Why did your husband volunteer that? Are they interested in trying something different? I would definitely just make something simple I think they would like unless they actually want to try something Asian inspired. I can’t imagine this going well and I would be annoyed my husband put me in this situation without asking. |
