Stalled out on weight loss - how can I cross to next plateau?

Anonymous
I steadily dropped 15 pounds over the last 2ish months by upping steps and cutting back on consumption. This is after gaining roughly 25-30 pounds over an 18-month period. I'd really love to lose another 10-15 pounds, but I haven't been able to move the scale needle for at least three weeks.

I do feel so much better dropping that 15 and am even looking better (the paunch lost its paunch - LOL) than before. Yet I'm in my early 60s, so I would like to lose some more for the times when I may be less ambulatory.

Appreciate any tips on how to move into the next phase - TIA.

add weight lifting a few times a week. replace one day of walking with another type of cardio - biking, swimming etc

15 pounds over two months at 60 YO is too much, unless you are already obese. Your body is adjusting to that.

Build in some cheat (or "refeed") meals (not days). Too much deprivation can make you body hold onto weight. Whenever I go off my diet for a day or two and allow myself some indulgences (within reason) and then get back on it, it seems to fire up my metabolism again and I'll drop another pound or two.

A little more info is needed on calorie intake, particularly what you're eating. Doing cardio for 20-30 minutes before moving onto lifting helps you as the cardio targets reserves you have built up, and then the lifting helps you lose weight.

Op I just want to say I have the same story! So I am here for answers too!! I didn’t think to post about it, but it has been on my mind.

I made great progress. And then, I can’t either keep up the same work and effort I was doing to eat right. OR even if I do keep it up.. it doesn’t seem to move anything beyond my usual range of 3 lbs from AM to PM. Gain 3 lbs during day, of course, wake up and weigh, same drop to the same low weight. The same all the time.

We need to know more: current weight/height, what are you eating and when, what are you doing for strength training and exercise. Steps alone won’t get you much further.

If you're trying to build strength you should do cardio after lifting.

Wait it out. Keep dieting, etc. Thermodynamics will take over.

Are you now at a normal BMI and looking to drop vanity weight? If so, try time-restricted eating windows: so, eat only three meals a day, each meal lasting no longer than 45 minutes, spaced 5-7 hours apart, with no snacking in between.

If you already do that, then -- without deliberately trying to lower your calorie intake -- try two meals a day, 5-7 hours apart, with no snacks.

If you haven't tried time-restricted eating (or fasting) before, you might want to listen to this lecture by a cardiologist, who does a nice job of elaborating the health benefits (of which weight loss is only one!): https://youtu.be/RuOvn4UqznU

I agree. I’m a lifelong yo-yo dieter and there’s always stalls like this. Eventually your body gives in.
