I meant to add that I think this whole argument stems from the fact that some of the main pro Oakton people put their kids on travel sports teams that practice near or at Oakton. So if I sign my kid up for Great Falls Reston soccer, that means they should get to play for Langley I guess? |
We are a Waples Mill family that did CYA because we didn't know any better. I'd say 80% play Vienna rec instead. My kid ended up at Hunters Woods and Carson for AAP so we stayed with CYA to play with the friends already made. Now they won't know anyone when they start sports at Oakton. If they fix that out of pyramid AAP nonsense then there would be no reason for Waples kids to play for CYA. |
My understanding is thst the comprehensive boundary adjustment will be finalized in January and the discussion for the WSH boundary will continue from Feb through June. I know it doesn’t make sense but Reid started the boundary process for WSH way too late. |
Good excuse to delay comprehensive boundary review. This is a bad idea to do it the way she plans. |
Your kid doesn't know other kids from Carson who are athletes?
You speak of "out of pyramid AAP nonsense," but you obviously sent your child to two centers rather than their base schools. Carson is at least in the Oakton pyramid, but its a little weird that you mention the AAP nonsense when you chose to engage in it. "No reason for Waples kids to play for CYA" also doesn't make sense when Franklin is their current base middle school. |
| New to this very long thread - could someone summarize where things are and date for next decision on new HS? |
It’s Great Falls Reston, lots of SLHS kids play in that rec league. A decent number of Herndon kids do as well, the Herndon league isn’t great. |
FCPS school board owned Western effective Aug 2025. It now has a permit for office use at the site. Draft Scenario 4 should have had Western HS boundaries: AP, no special optional programs since at 2000 there is not the space, * on attendance phase in - no option for grades 9 and 10. There are different membership changes for schools but all drafts had small differences on Chantilly and Westfield: scenario 4- Centreville to Westfield 115. None out from Chantilly but 45 in from Fairfax HS. 4 Western boundary drafts - Centreville to Westfield 362, increased out by 247 Chantilly 340 to Westfield. 351 or 358 to Western. Westfield maximum 1005 to Western including Discovery Square variable [940 without]. Floris/Westfield Discovery Square 65 should be at Western. Variables: Crossfield : South Lakes school site 38, Oakton 362, Chantilly 7 Navy Island in Crossfield attendance area: 74 Oakton Fox Mill : 370 South Lakes. Estimated 32% of Fox Mill base school membership is generated from west of the Fairfax County Parkway. |
They probably meant Oakton kids as in kids eventually going to Oakton HS…not Oakton ES kids. |
The news of FCPS purchasing KAA broke in June. There was nothing stopping Reid from including KAA in the boundary study. Many posters on this board repeatedly pointed out that FCPS should incorporate KAA into the comprehensive boundary study as a possible scenario. Instead, she chose to sit on it, only vaguely talking about “the endless possibilities for the 22nd century school.” |
The "choice" was go to Hunters Woods for AAP or get a watered-down local level 3 version at Waples. Not much of a choice. I fully support getting rid of middle school centers so that all the in-boundary kids for Franklin have to go there for AAP. Until that happens though almost everyone is going to choose the center, which concentrates AAP kids at the center and provides more and better opportunities. Plus, if you kid has attended Hunters Woods since 3rd grade they are going to want to go to the middle school where all their friends from the past 4 years went. My kid played football for CYA this year. Every other kid on his team (the only CYA team) is going to Chantilly or Westfield next year. He won't know any "Carson athletes" on the Oakton freshman team unless they are playing for the first time, or they didn't play for CYA. |
No, you have to read it like the rest of us did |
Everything official is here. Nothing else matter. We are just here for entertainment. https://www.fcps.edu/about-fcps/facilities/building-our-future-capital-projects/western-high-capital-project?utm_campaign+=&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery |
Your kid will be fine. I work at private k-8 school, and we send kids to different public schools all the time. Sometimes only one or two end up at the same high school. They figure it out. Going to August football practices is a fabulous way to make new friends. |
Oh look. This section of their website mysteriously disappeared. I guess the Crossfield parents running the rooted in Oakton group realized they made a strategic mistake in calling for a magnet and decided to change course. |
