Lunch detention for saying "the r word"?

Anonymous
Are teachers allowed to give lunch detentions in MS? My child was assigned lunch detention for calling a friend what the teacher referred to as "the r word" in the hallway. The friend wasn't upset by it and the teacher isn't even his. From what I hear on here, there are a lot worse things being said in the hallway all the time.

Sounds like your child learned an important lesson about using inappropriate language. And yes, the "R" word is one of the worst words you can use to describe another person.

I'm surprised your kid was given detention for even that, since MCPS lets much more colorful language fly regularly. Also, they're anti-detention these days.

I can think of a lot worse but yes - chalk this up to a learning experience for your child.

Are you trying to say that word should be ok because the friend wasn't bother by it???

Yes, and also, I'm guessing, because the person who was the target of the word isn't actually in fact mentally disabled.

You're first reaction is to rebuke the punishment instead of talking with your child about how horrible that word is? I really feel for teachers with these kinds of parents.

Right. I would have a long talk with my kid instead of coming here to post about it.

When did MCPS start giving out all these suspensions and detentions? Did they give up on RJ?

Good. Glad your spawn got detention. Maybe the school will teach him what he is obviously not learning at home.

I am from a different era where the R word was used all the time so personally, I would not give detention for that, just talking to but it is a lesson learned. There are so many worse things that kids are doing so it seems silly for detention for this.

Exactly what I am thinking. I would be disgusted my child said this and he would would have a lot more punishment at home than one single detention.

The response seems extreme, especially given the circumstance. A warning should have been given instead, or even an RJ chat. People are just over the top sensitive about words in certain areas, creating such delicate snowflakes.
