other OTF thread...does it actually work?

Anonymous
I'll start with saying I really enjoy OTF and work out much more intensely in the classes than I would on my own. I've been a member for about 3mo

But I follow a few of the local studios on instagram and they regularly post people celebrating their 300th / 400th / 500th etc workout...basically people that have been doing multiple OTF workouts a week for years most likely. And for many their bodies don't really look in shape / or even that good. I don't just mean they look like they have a good amount of muscle and also enjoy too many late night pizzas....more they don't look like someone that works out much at all.

I'd really hope that if I did this 3x a week for YEARS...my body would look like i was someone that worked out pretty intensely. I wonder if the actual benefit is actually anywhere close to what they claim

I think at a certain point, age trumps all. It’s hard to look hardcore cut when you’re 50. But I’d say they probably look a lot better than they would have if they weren’t working out.

Peoples bodies are different and respond differently to exercise. My sense is that this notion is perpetually lost on most DCUMers.

It's easy to go easy at OTF. The defined look that your looking for comes from diet and heavy lifting. There isn't the opportunity to do sustained heavy lifting at OTF. Most of the weights are 8-25lbs. There is a rack of heavier weights but everyone is competing for them.

A thousand times, this.

You change how your body looks through diet not exercise.

You can exercise all you want but if your diet isn't in check you will be more fit, but look exactly the same.

3x a week of even intense exercise is really not much at all. I don’t think it would even move you out of the “sedentary” category and onto the “light exercise” category if you otherwise just have an office job that you drive to.

Of course it does, by any normal definition of the words “sedentary” and “light exercise.”

I mean under the definition of any TDEE calculator. You can still be burning a “sedentary” range of calories hitting a gym 3x a week.

I wouldn't call OTF an intense workout. The people who look like they work out, are toned fit and muscular with bodies you would think look good, don't do OTF. The OTF gym I went to definitely skewed older. It's an approachable, safe, go at your own pace kind of workout for people who don't really want to work out that intensely.

DP - OP, OTF isn’t going to build muscle for most people; there’s just not enough strength training. People can still be healthier for having done it, though, which is the point.

But also: three times/week of intense exercise isn’t that much. Most people who “look like they work out” do so daily, or twice a day.

And this is the problem. People do a class like OTF, feel like they worked hard, which they proudly did, but then sit there other 23 hours of the day. People overestimated how many calories they burn.

All you can do is see how your own body responds, OP. If it doesn't do it for you you can try something else. Assuming that you have exercised in the past, you probably have some sense of how YOU look and feel when you're fit.

You should go to OTF because you find it fun and because it will improve your cardiovascular system. If you want to change the shape of your body, eating, lifting, and walking are more effectively ways to get there.

This. The 10-15 min of strength you get isn't going to make a big difference. I still go once a week because I like not having to think about a workout but just being told what to do.
