About a week or so ago, Macron was on a three day state visit in China. During his return trip, he gave an interview to a business-centric French publication—'Les Echos'— which ended up triggering a diplomatic row on both sides of the Atlantic, but mostly in Europe. Some of the controversial remarks were as follows : - Does a potential military conflict over the issue of Taiwan concern Europe? -Europe shouldn't be a follower of the United States - He also questioned the extra territoriality of the United States dollar . Needless to say, starting in Europe,—particularly in Germany —, the reactions were swift, with some newspapers calling into question his mental acuity and what not.Personally, to say I was incensed is an understatement. Look, I'm no flag waving, America can do no wrong zealot. I'm an American citizen who wasn't actually born in this country . I wish I could say I'm surprised by the predictable, yet , hypocritical attitude of the French. Since the end of world War 2 , France has always had an inexplicable mixture of envy, jealousy, and weird resentment towards the U.S. Emmanuel Macron's latest statements should be taken as a 'the cat's out the bag'moment by U.S foreign policy makers who should act accordingly moving forward. |

I’ll address #3. The “extra territoriality” of the dollar is putting the global economy at risk. McCarthy (whom it took double digit votes to elect in the first place) has 4 votes to spare and is dealing with everyone from MTG, Bobbert and Gaetz to the tea party in negotiating the debt ceiling. He has yet to articulate a coherent solution. And no, the party holding the Senate and White House isn’t going to give him a rescission halfway through the fiscal year and MTG’s dream list.
France should be concerned because there is a good chance we will default on our debt this year and take France down with us. Looking at my IRA and 529s, I’d feel better if world currency wasn’t tied to the dollar. I think most American don’t understand just how bad a default will be. But they will when SSA and the VA can’t send out checks. |
| PP: as for Taiwan, let’s look at The Princess Bride for wisdom: never get involved in a land war in Asia. After 20 years and trillions of dollars in Afghanistan, nobody with any sense has an appetite for boots on the ground in Taiwan. Especially since China will win a war of attrition. They have a larger army and a much high tolerance for casualties. I would hope we would have learned from Vietnam that proxy wars are deeply unpopular and photos of our troops in coffins don’t play well. So, I agree in principal with him. Of course an invasion of Taiwan concerns me. Enough to fight a second Vietnam? No so much. |
| And here is #2. I expect France, as a member of NATO to be our ally. But that is different from being a follower. The EU isn’t going to act against their interests because we tell them to. And they shouldn’t. I expect France to share intelligence (which after Snowden and Manning and this week and Trump hoarding classified intel is a big ask) and stand by us during events like 9/11. I don’t expect them to follow orders. Why do you? |

Reality is Germany's leadership is making overtures to China. So is Brazil, Saudi Arabia, India, and other countries.
They see a power vacuum from weakness in the Biden administration and China is taking full advantage of it. What are you democrats going to do other than whine about it and double down on woke and climate change? Need I remind you that thanks to your environmental policies, such as anti-mining, most of the materials for batteries and electronics come from China, so you can "want" for all things "sustainable", but they aren't coming from the USA. Your move. |
| Remind me again which recent President was determined to pull us out of NATO and chose Russia over out NATO allies? Because it wasn’t Biden. |
It takes an act of congress to pull out of NATO. |

We stupidly went into Afghanistan. I learned in elementary school that no invader has ever won in Afghanistan. So what was the REAL reason why we spent twenty years and trillions that could have funded social security and medicare, huh? Y''all tell me, because I'm stumped.
Ditto with Vietnam. It was not our fight, but we stupidly entered there too. Now Pelosi goes to Taiwan and sticks her tongue out at China, with predictable results. Is she senile, or just stupidly arrogant, or did she have a long game playing that we should be aware of? Huh? We're bankrupting our country with stupid wars. If something starts with China, we need to send Nancy Pelosi's grandchildren in with the first group of boots on the ground, front lines. |
| Biden is driving the Allies to a breaking point with his forever war. |
Lol.This is exactly what is called saying a bunch of nothing . We will take france down with them? Do you by any chance have any idea what you're talking about ? Clearly not . Hint : Everything you wrote has zero basis in economics, much less global economics . |

French person here. I recognize you - you like to dump on my country, for some reason. And you’re so hateful you’re now creating a thread about it.
1. The US doesn’t get to decide for France or the EU or anyone else what their foreign policy should be. 2. Also, since W. Bush lied to the world and pushed France to send its soldiers to die in Iraq for non existent WMDs, and launched a war that killed, injured and traumatized a staggering number of peoples, notably Iraqis, you do NOT have the moral high ground. 3. Don’t be stupid. Of course NATO countries have a special bond. None will ever take the side of a non-Democratic nation! Macron has the right to create daylight between his position and Biden’s! It doesn’t mean we’re enemies, or even that we disagree on fundamentals. It does not mean we’re pro-China or anti-Taiwan. 4. We helped you in your war of Independence. Remember Lafayette (I descend from his wife’s family)? We hold values of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity. We elect our Presidents by direct vote, instead of your electoral college. Our government is much more representative than yours. Don’t pretend to be more democratic. |
Interesting. So you think it’s an act of duplicity for the French to have their own interests and pursue them with independent policies? |
| France assesses, correctly, that they have nothing to do with whatever issue the US decided it has with china vs Taiwan. It’s far and no one cares. |
Which is the only reason it didn’t happen. But you can sit down now and stop it with the Biden lack of NATO leadership. The former guy hated NATO and worked against it. |
