Religious people who have affairs

How do they justify it or live with the hypocrisy? SIL studies the Bible and goes to mass every week but cheated. Not just once but long term. Besides the family being floored when we found out, I’m genuinely curious how she or anyone with a faith-based life reconciles that.

Beg for forgiveness on Sunday. Then do it again. Beg again.

They don't reconcile it. They either feel guilty about it for the rest of their lives or pray it away.

Pray it away. See the Ukraine leaker that prayed to God that he not get caught. Somehow God is always on their side, even when they do evil.

Another thing OP as the victim of someone who did this, they will say the church made them marry. They were trying to do the right and honorable thing. They were limited in what they could do because of the church's laws. On and on.

All kinds of people use church as a way to make themselves feel better about all the bad stuff they do. Not just cheating.

"We're all sinners". Ha

I think a lot of purportedly/outwardly religious people are just trying to overcompensate

Was she religious before she cheated? A lot of people find religion after they’ve effed up. Perhaps religion is keeping her accountable.

With the recognition of wrong doing every week begging would bring, it’s mind boggling they can continue to do it. While praying alongside spouse no less. It must be that they are claiming that they are weak and have no control. Somehow they are getting there mentally.

People have a remarkable ability to come up with ways to justify to themselves whatever foolish/selfish/evil thing they're doing.

You would hope that somewhere in all those church services, she might have heard something to make her question those self-justifications. God forgives us, but that doesn't mean He doesn't want us to get our acts together.
