Early Predictions 2028: AOC, Whitmer, Newsome or …?

Seems like we have:

- two being fiery, mainstream-ish potentials in Newsome and Kelly,
- a kinda-sorta Trump appeaser in Whitmer who made some bad choices with social media posts but is well-liked in Michigan,
- AOC, a progressive darling, Bernie successor,
- Buttigieg, a milquetoast Midwesterner,
- Shapiro, with the Israel albatross around his neck,
- Harris, with the Biden albatross around her neck,
- ????

I still leave open a possible celebrity candidate.

Kelly has a great resume. And is an honorable and decent man who clearly wants to do the right thing. But he's not good on tv. He doesn't have the charisma that projects - like an Obama or Bill Clinton. And that's a liability in this media-saturated world.

Newsom is like Bill Clinton. Charismatic. Sharp. And he will f%$k anyone in a skirt - the Trump women, his staffers, the wives of his staffers. And in his down time, he spends his hours online trolling, which I get is a useful skill these days. But do we really want to go down this road in 2028? A Newsom candidacy will be an absolute sh%tshow. I'm old enough to remember bimbo eruptions. I get that Trump is many times worse, but do Democrats really want to follow that with a skeezy candidate themselves? I do believe that after Trump, a wholesome family person with a solid marriage is going to be a much stronger candidate.

Pritzker's problem is that he was born a billionaire. He inherited the Hyatt fortune. I think we all recognize that we need less billionaires in politics. His fortune will be put under the microscope, and I'm sure there will be many questionable things. Plus, come on, the middle class is struggling with how to pay the mortgage/rent, food bills, car payments, health insurance, college etc. Pritzker has no idea what that's like. He's too rich to click with middle class issues.

AOC is 36. Too young. And a lightening rod for conservatives. But she is super charismatic and quick. Maybe in some years, after she takes Schumer's seat as senator for NY.

Beshear is the governor you want when your neighborhood has been flooded. Competent. Well-meaning. Clearly a good dude. But there is no gravitas or spine with this guy. He will get wrecked in a meeting with Putin or Xi. The presidency of the United States is not his place.

I don't know what happened to Whitmer. Some serious missteps. It's like she decided to lean into the sorority girl theme. Which was a mistake. Not a credible candidate.

I am not seeing a viable, successful candidate at this moment in time. Democrats aren't running against Trump in 2028. Given the trajectory of his polls, my dog will be able to defeat Trump in 2028. But if Republicans choose someone reasonably sane like a Nikki Haley or Marco Rubio, Democrats really need to come up with someone good to win. Not seeing it yet.

Kelly reminds me of Ike. Dull but strong. Maybe this will appeal to people who are sick of the non-stop mania.

Pritzker's money seems like a good thing to me, not to progressives but maybe to independents. I think being rich was a lot of Trump's appeal. People like rich people.

Not saying I wouldn't vote for him but I don't like rich people.

There are some great people in the house — military vets who are social progressives who care about working people — Deluzio, Crow, Gallego. These are the people that are true patriots not these Republicans who sell out to Putin and just want to tear the country apart with hate and division. I don’t know if it’s too hard for someone like that to launch to the presidency.

I like Kelly too but he always strikes me as such a reluctant politician — only got into it because Gabby was shot. In a parallel universe, gabby is out first female President, I think. A parallel universe where Arizona had a good red flag law in 2010.

I still like Whitmer too I guess but I’m twice burned and thrice shy on the female candidates. Kills me to say it but there it is. I like Booker too but I feel llle people don’t like him? Maybe NJ is just a tough state to run from — if you’re Jersey enough to win there you’re probably too Jersey for the other 49 states.

Newsomr and AOC are just suicidal for the party. They should sit tight and play the social media role to take down the R candidate, and get whole heartedly behind the D.

Ike was elected 8 years after leading allied forces on D-Day. Kelly's accomplishments are good, but they are not defeated the Nazis and saved civilization good. In this era, a couple of TikTok videos could wreck him. He has nowhere near the gravitas that Eisenhower had in 1952.

Pritzker's wealth is both a blessing and a curse. Right now, we have a Republican administration full of billionaires. A lot of them. And all deeply corrupt. We have three more years to go with these billionaires. I do not think Pritzker being an inherited billionaire is going to be helpful in 2028. If Republicans choose anyone with a middle class background, Pritzker will be extremely vulnerable, especially once all his investments get the spotlight.

I believe Trump is very unique. His level of corruption and sociopathy is not something that can be replicated. And it would be foolish for Democrats to take Trump's garbage as some kind of acceptable norm. Democrats need a candidate that can click with the middle class.

Any normal nominee will make a lot of sense to the American public after the misery we've had since Obama left office.

Terrible summary.
Nearly every weakness you ascribe to Democrats could be assigned equally to Republicans. Pritzger is an out-of-touch billionaire? What do you think the entire Republican brand represents? Newsome likes the ladies? MAGA shields child rapists.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Democrats ARE running against Trump in 2028. Whoever the Republican nominee is will have to defend his record, since they kneeled to him for the last four years. Nearly any of thd Democrats you list (except maybe for AOC) would be able to dispatch Rubio or Vance with ease.

If you want to start a thread on GOP candidate predictions go ahead. The problem with our party is that we have too many people like you who are stuck on "Republicans are worse." You need to get serious. That is the path that got us Trump, again. Too many in this party are out of touch with every day people. It is disappointing, because the Democratic Party now has too many gatekeepers, keeping people out of the big tent. So, so sad.

He’s not currently doing it in combat, but let’s not pretend that Kelly isn’t doing his part to fight Nazis and save civilization. We are just earlier on the timeline.

You don’t think that the DNC controls who makes the primaries or who gets support from the party?

So, so sad.

Nobody is being “gate kept”. Primaries are open and you can vote for who you want.

You don’t think that the DNC controls who makes the primaries or who gets support from the party?

Each state party sets the rules for qualification for primaries, but I haven’t seen any systematic exclusion of particular viewpoints. Bernie Sanders was on the ballot in every primary in 2016 and 2020 in those states he chose to compete in. Does the DNC put its energy toward centrist candidates that are perceived as “electable”? Sure. But the primaries aren’t rigged, and you can do fifteen minutes of internet research to uncover the platforms of fringe candidates, and then vote for them.

The reality is that most Democratic voters are pretty middle of the road, and far left candidates simply don’t appeal outside of a few major cities.

You haven't seen/heard all those backroom deals? If it isn't on the internet, it didn't happen.

With regard to the primaries, one factor that weakened the field of candidates in 2016 and 2020 was the clear mega-donor choice being well known before the first state primary took place. Lesser known up and coming politicians are less likely to enter a race when they know they are up against the will of their party's financiers .

HRC was a solid choice for the 2016 nomination but she should have had more competition competing on a fair playing field. Her lacking the need to campaign more diligently during the Dem primary season was a detriment to her general election campaign; particularly in the Midwestern swing states.

Biden being the mega-donor choice in 2020 set things in motion for the 2024 loss to Trump. We need not to go down that road again.

I agree that megadonor money might dissuade fringe candidates. But my recollection of 2020 doesn’t align with yours. I recall a very open pre-primary campaign with Warren, Harris, and Buttigieg all briefly holding a polling lead. Biden finally came to the fore via his support within the Black community, and specifically the endorsement of Clyburn before the SC primary, plus he had strong enough debate performances to assuage fears about his age. The voters chose Biden after considering the alternatives. That may not have been the best choice, but it certainly wasn’t from lack of choice.
