College and University Discussion
| Fit aside, which is perceived as better or are they true peers? |
|
peers
Many N/E-ers who are my age (50s) still consider Wes better but having had two kids go through the app cycle in the past few years, Hamilton is actually the tougher admit nowadays. Plus my fellow 50-somethings won’t be doing the hiring for most of the professional careers of students going to college today 😊. |
+1. |
| I think they would appeal to a similar student. Wes has more access to city. Ham has more access to outdoorsy, Adirondack fun. |
|
For film studies, Wesleyan is better.
Depends upon one's major to an extent. |
yes -Ham puts emphasis on writing, public speaking. I think Wes has more students who are politically active ,a bit more angst. possibly more difference between athletes/non athletes. Ham might attract a wider range of students that bridge the divide. |
Agreed. |

Wesleyan is “better.”
But really they are both good and the student should go to the one that feels like a better fit. |
curious by what metric or rating? |
According to the holy grail USWNR hamilton 15(but recently 9) and Wes 18. |
People who grew up in the NE and mid Atlantic going to top high schools would consider Wesleyan “better.” Traditionally it was more prestigious. I’m not saying it actually is better for every kid. I’m just saying it was traditionally harder to get into and more prestigious. I went to a top three and I remember meeting someone who went to Hamilton and I had never heard of it. I think that has really changed in the last fifteen years. Hamliton’s reputation has improved. |
Just adding, I don’t think a kid should choose Hamilton over Wesleyan just because older people might perceive it as “better.” |
| Congrats on having two great options to choose from! There is a difference in size of the school to consider. Ham is about 2K students while Wes is about 3K+ students. Wes a liberal arts school with a student population size that affords more academic and social options but Ham has a more intimate small school feel. Feel like you can’t go wrong with either option. |
Yes, that's what the first response explained so Wes is not longer "better" in today's world. Just like 40 years ago Emory could be a safety for many. 10 years ago nobody heard of Elon. Then there's Tulane...things. change. |
Agree with this. |
