DC has a 504 plan with extended time for assignments, and occasionally (2-3 a quarter) turns in late assignment after speaking with the teachers. In Q1 and Q2 all but one of the teachers ended up grading the late assignments without penalty. One teacher never graded the late assignment despite multiple efforts by DC and by me which ended up impacting the final grade. We contacted a department supervisor who did not respond to multiple emails. The counselor who was also on the chain did respond acknowledging the issue but not directly to the question about the grade so we know that email was received by all. We decided to let that go because that teacher seemed unstable more generally, and we did not want to make DC a target in class.
This quarter there is a second teacher who has not graded the late assignment which is worth a lot of points and has given a 0 which is impacting the final grade. What do we do? Both DC and I have tried to communicate with the teacher multiple times. We did cc the counselor in charge of the 504 plan but no response. DC is in HS so these grades will go on the transcript and they are upset and panicked. What would you do? |
| Go further up the chain. Save all documentation including emails. Try to create a timeline with the dates your DD spoke with her teacher. |
| Email the teacher & counselor. Copy the Dept chair and the asst principal that supports that grade. Explain what’s happening and confusion as to why the 504 plan is not being followed. Attach a pdf of the 504. |
| How late is your kid turning the assignment in? If he's past the time and a half or whatever his 504 says, then the teacher doesn't have to accept it. |
| I am confused by your post. Is your child getting permission each time this happens, like ahead of the fact? Because it seems like you imply this is the case at the beginning of your post but it is unclear after that. |
| Post this also on the Special Needs board. Parents over there have tons of experience with this stuff. |

As a parent of a child in a similar position - it is critical that this is taken care of and back to the 1st marking period as these will impact your childs transcript. GPA is the most important factor for college admission.
Send an email to the counselor asking for the specific process for a grade appeal (they do not want to do this - as now it is a formal administrative process) |
| Document everything and go as far up the chain as you need to on this. Not following accommodations can open the district up to a lawsuit (as it should). I’m a professor at a public university. Extended time to complete assignments is a common accommodation. It is made very clear to us that we open the university up to being sued if we don’t follow these accommodations. It makes me mad when I hear about teachers and professors not following these. Yes it’s extra work to keep track of who has accommodations and what exactly they specify. It’s not an excuse to not follow them. |
The answer to this is key as to how to handle. |
The department chair cannot do anything about this. |
Doesn’t the Dept chair participate in the supervision of the teacher? If a member of the dept is struggling to support a student, the chair needs to know. |
| The dept chair may not be able to directly resolve the problem, but if no one is responding, they are an appropriate person to involve. Even if just to nudge their colleagues, consult with the teacher, or prompt someone to take action |
This is true, it’s not unlimited time AND is the accommodation for assignments or just assessments? |
+1, counselors oversee 504s. |
