Posting the remaining two candidate's websites and twitter here so we can all make informed decisions:
Angelo Cocchiaro: https://www.angeloforarlington.com/ https://twitter.com/AngeloForChange Endorsements listed on website: Not found at time of posting Bio from website: "Born & Raised a Democrat's Democrat. It was just over 22 years ago, when this future School Board member was born at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Maryland. In the intervening years, my parents became divorced and our family moved around a lot. I've been a Northern Virginian since my dad moved us to Culpeper in 2004. My mom eventually settled down in the Shenandoah Valley community of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. This split upbringing, with West Virginia and NoVA roots, led me to become very familiar with US-522, the highway that connects the two towns. In 2018, I got my high school diploma in Berkeley Springs and began studies at American University in the District. Growing up, we didn't have it easy. I benefited at times from free and reduced-price school meals, SNAP (that's the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, AKA "food stamps"), Medicaid, you name it. I went to college on the Pell Grant and benefited from food pantries throughout my time there. That's why I'm putting free school meals and food equity food front and center in this campaign. It comes from a place inside the heart, and that's a fundamentally different perspective than has existed on the School Board." Miranda Turner: https://www.mirandaturner.org/ https://twitter.com/Miranda4APS Endorsements listed on website: https://www.mirandaturner.org/my-supporters Bio from website: "I was born and raised in Washington, D.C. and have lived in Arlington for nine years. I graduated from Brown University, where I majored in public policy and played volleyball. I also spent a semester at Bank Street College of Education and student-taught second grade. I earned my law degree at UVA Law, where I met my husband, Andy. We live with our three children in the Green Valley neighborhood. My mom, Barrett class of ’62, Kenmore ‘65, and Wakefield ‘69, still lives in the area. I’ve been an APS parent since 2015. I was a founding member of the Drew PTA in 2019 and still serve as Social Media Chair, am involved with the Montessori Public School of Arlington PTA, and serve as site liaison for the Drew/Green Valley Girls on the Run team. I’m a member of the Early Childhood Education Committee for the Advisory Council on Teaching & Learning. I volunteer as a Precinct Captain for the Arlington Democrats and spent time last fall knocking doors and poll greeting to elect local Democrats. I’m also a member of Green Valley Civic Association’s Executive Committee and our delegate to the Civic Federation. In my professional life as a lawyer, I devote substantial time to volunteer pro bono work. I currently represent Planned Parenthood and litigate abortion rights in federal court, and I’ve mentored younger lawyers in housing rights cases and parole proceedings." If this thread could stick with what the candidates themselves have actually said rather than inferences I think that would be the most helpful. |
This is really helpful! Thank you for the information! |
So from Angelo's bio it's not clear to me -- is he a college graduate? It just says he "began studies." Did he finish elsewhere? Or is he still a student? Or did he drop out? Does anyone know? |
Does Angelo live in Arlington? That's not clear from the website. How long has he lived in Arlington? |
OK, I checked his LinkedIn, and it looks like he graduated in 2022. So, if he lives in Arlington, it's not even been for a year: School of Public Affairs, American University Bachelor's degree, Communications, Law, Economics, and Government (CLEG) 2018-2022 Activities and societies: AU College Democrats, AU Rotaract Club |
Someone is obviously biased towards one candidate. I'll wait until after the first debate before making any decisions. |
Candidates will finally speak in their own words soon, that's for sure. Too early to make a choice amongst two weak candidates. |
Angelo answered some questions on AEM a week or so ago. I don't think I'm allowed to post that here, but anyone who wants to can go find it. |
+1 We should look at their actions too, not just their words. |
Have any forums been announced? |
Anyone can say whatever they want on their campaign websites. There's really not much to talk about until they start circulating in our community and start answering the hard questions. Neither of them have really offered much up yet about themselves and how they will vote on certain issues that many of us care about. |
Not that I'm aware of, but it's early in the race. There will be candidate forums soon. |
I think he doesn't live in Arlington, or if he does now, he literally just moved weeks (?) ago for this race. |
Those were all "non-answers" to be honest. "Let's have a coffee", was the common answer. |
Looks like Miranda was the guest at the Arlington Senior Democratic Lunch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lCXY18MMlE |
