Math track if taking Algebra 1 in 7th?

Anonymous
What is the track - wondering if it advances too far from a pressure/time commitment standpoint?

8th: Geometry
9th: Algebra 2
10th: Precalculus
11th: Calc AB or BC
12th: AP Stats or Multivariable or another course

One thing I'm not sure about is if all middle schools offer Geometry or if some require online or travel to the high school. That would be my biggest worry. Memorization really kicks up in Precalculus and Calculus, along with depth of problems.

Our middle school only offers one geometry class. Not sure if the drive to slow acceleration will knock geometry from our school......eventually. I see this happening, not sure when - maybe 2 years?

Is the bolded above for AP? If so, what is the equivalent in IB?

IB is IB Math ANL&APP HL 2. I have read that kids cannot take this until they are seniors so they would take another math class in their Junior year but I am not certain that is the case.

I think all middle schools do offer Geometry in FCPS currently.

My 8th grade SON takes geometry now. I have a daughter in 2nd grade. So if they pull back on advanced math offerings, my DAUGHTER won't have the same opportunity to take advanced math as her other brother? Way to hold back girls.

A child taking Alg 1 in 7th grade on an IB track can take:

9th: Algebra 2
10th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 1
11th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 2 (either HL or SL)
12th: Multivariable or another course through DE

OR

9th: Algebra 2
10th: AP Stats or Precalc (if offered)
11th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 1
12th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 2 (either HL or SL)

OR

9th: Algebra 2
10th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 1
11th: AP Stats (if offered)
12th: IB Analysis or IB Applications 2 (either HL or SL)

Depends if your school offers non-IB upper level courses. Some do, some don't. You can absolutely take IB year 2 as an 11th grader, but if you are a diploma candidate and it's an HL course the test must be taken your senior year. If you aren't a diploma candidate you can test any time.

Oh stop, you know it has nothing to do with gender

Not all middle schools offer geometry. Some have you walk to the high school or take it online if they can't create a cohort large enough to justify a teacher. It's why some of the lower performing schools throw the requirement for the IOWA scores or SOL minimums out the window to have at least 10 7th graders in algebra if only 5 actually qualify. They can squeeze them into an existing 8th grade algebra class, but the following year they can't "use up" a teacher slot for 5 kids.

Whoooweee!

PP, sorry to say, math may not be for you.

You do realize that it doesn't matter that you have an older son and a younger daughter? If the Advanced Math track changes for some reason, it is not because they want to deprive girls of an opportunity. It is not like boys will be allowed on the advanced math track and girls are not.

Thanks, it is just taking the test. I looked at my child's future high school and they have math beyond IB HL. I don't get why they have to wait to take the test if they are in the diploma track but such is life.

The link takes you to the Math Course offerings for South Lakes HS, an IB school. The offer multivariate calculus and linear algebra. Discrete math looks interesting, almost like matrix algebra, but I am not sure how that would play into the math sequence. I am not sure why those classes are half a credit, is that because they are half a year?

I don't care what their intent is - I care about the impact / result. We shouldn't want girls of all people held back in STEM.

DP. You sound pretty silly. If your DD were a DS, then you wouldn't care at all?
