I stopped running because of feet and knee issues, and now I've lost my capacity to run! oh, so tiring. But I did the run-walk thing this morning. I've never done this before. for most of my run I did about 300 steps of running, 100-150 steps of walking (or more if needed), repeat. My overall rate was 12:07 over 4 miles ... seems so slow. How long does it take to get fully running, do you think? |
Ultimately it will depend on your injuries. But when I've had to oscillate between running and walking, I just keep increasing the running time and decreasing the walking time as my body tells me to. Eventually, and if you are consistent you get to all running. What I have found though, if you tend to have certain types of running injuries (for me its always my knee) - unless you figure out how to reduce the injury - it will come back. Now, well into my mid-50's I do mostly walking - albeit - fast and lots of hills - it fits better with what my body can handle. |
God people who think they are "so slow" are the worst. I can't take you seriously OP. Pace is an effort, stop caring so much about the watch and comparing yourself. |
I did a couch to 5k that took a few months, but once the running portion hit 12 minutes, I found that could go much longer albeit at a slow job. Being able to keep a pace that I felt was hard/fast for a half hour took about three months |
I would do shorter distances and slowly increase. Four miles is a lot if you can’t even run a mile. You really want to build little by little to prevent injury. |
Sorry to annoy you, PP. I didn't even share what my pace was, because it isn't relevant to you. My pace was slow comparted to my previous running pace. Does that help you? I'm not comparing myself to you or my friends or my children or my mother. I'm comparing me to me. So, please stop caring about what I care about, and let me care about what interests me. Thank you. |
Lol. I am an extremely slow runner. I don’t stop, but my pace is 12-13. I still consider myself a runner. Do you know why? Because I run.
All you need to be doing to be fully running is… to run. |
"12:07 over 4 miles" is sharing your pace, dummy. |
Do a more structured run-walk program like Couch to 5k. It feels hard and slow at first, but it really works to build up to running. I do this every time that I get back into running after an injury. |
My pre-injury pace. No need to name-call. Why has this gotten under your skin so much? |

Inspiring! Thanks. A good reminder. I walk daily, but get more satisfaction and sweat from running - so want to get back and this is a good reminder. |
Probably a few months. And if you don’t get there, run walk lets you obtain many of the same benefits. I know it can be frustrating to not be able to do what you once could. Good luck. |
Hugs, I love you you eeeny wittle wone. |
I only run-walk now in my mid-40s bc it's easier on my body. You can be faster and still have walk intervals, I've found. I can do an overall 9;9:30 mm pace with even 1:30 run; 30 sec walk intervals, but my usual overall pace is around 11. |
