Where do the A-/B+ students go?

Anonymous
After a heartbreaking rejection from a school thought to be a close match, and where DS was a double legacy, it’s become clear that DS needs to reconsider his options. Maybe take a gap year and reapply next year.

Where are the A-/B+ students applying? Good kids with good stats, but not the brainiacs?

Let me guess -VT? Try Pitt but apply early (like august). Lots of kids attending that were shut out of other schools. Impressed with the caliber of the kids going there with my son.

Most places.

Don't take a gap year, have him go to a safety that he either likes or is very affordable and apply to transfer. It's a complete waste of time to take a gap year and re-apply, he likely won't get into any better schools than the ones he's getting into this year.

You’re right, it’s VT. I feel badly for DS, especially since DH and I both went there. I’ve tried to tell DS that admissions were easier way back then, but it’s a hard rejection to handle.

My kid is A-/B+ and has acceptances to VCU, GMU, VT, CWRU, UMDCP, Pitt, RPI, and Rose-Hulman for CS. He was rejected from GT.

My A- student (3.93 weighted GPA) middle class white girl with an 1150 SAT (not submitted) applied to and was admitted to Penn State and Virginia Tech (deferred from ED there and offered for EA with 14k in aid). Waiting on JMU, Miami University in Ohio, Arizona State, CNU, GMU and SUNY Geneseo.

She had like 9 APs, I think. Decent extracurriculars. Good supplementals for tech and she was highly active in initiating interaction with the admissions officer for her school, which probably signaled demonstrated interest.

VT is leading candidate but will see what the others offer. Miami intrigues her because of a program that allows you to design your own major.

Yes, probably not GT, Tulane and Wake Forest with those grades but lots of other good schools would be happy with A-/B+.

VT takes a ton of transfers. He should go to his best option and apply to transfer if he doesn't love it. Where's he already in and where's he still waiting? And what probable major?

Look at schools with rolling admissions. There is still time without a gap year.

Yes. My kid with similar stats got into Tulane ED.

My dc with a 3.5 UW GPA (1 AP class and a few honors, currently in regular Calculus) and 31 ACT has been accepted at UVM, Denver U, and Clark with significant merit scholarships so far. There are tons of great schools out there.
