Won’t use the word “girl”

Anonymous
So, someone used a specific word to apply to a specific person, and you assume that they won't use another word at all?

Should I assume your whole generation won't use the world "person" if you choose to use the word "girl" to refer to someone?

I think there is a general trend towards using a gender neutral term, unless specifically talking about someone's gender. So, I say "server" instead of "waitress", and "firefighter" instead of "fireman" even when I am pretty confident I knew that the server was female and the firefighter was male. I might ask "where do you buy shoes for a toddler?" even though I know whether my specific toddler is a little boy or a little girl. So, maybe it was just carrying this habit over to the pregnant person. Or maybe since they are talking about a specific person, they are using the word that person prefers.

This doesn’t happens in 95% of the country.

What doesn't happen? That high school students get pregnant? That sometimes people use the word person to refer to people who are female? Or that people assume that if someone uses the word person they have an objection to the word "girl"?

My dd told me there a pregnant person at her school….::

Because they don't want to be cancelled and person is the term that they are expected to use. Even if they don't believe it. They don't want to accidentally say girl or woman to you because they might slip up and use that word o their peers.

If they don't believe a woman or a girl is a person?

Yes, that is a belief one should keep to oneself.

This is a totally sane and correct take. Hope it won’t get buried.

Also, if someone is about to have a child, I think they probably should be called a woman or a person rather than “girl.”

I think you’re focusing on the wrong thing, as well as making silly generalizations and engaging in an annoying use of ellipses.

Is the pregnant student 18 or older?

My teens use the word girl and have never heard of or seen a pregnant one at their large public schools. There probably is one every now and then, but since they don't know every single girl and it happens rarely... statistics!

You've got to learn not to generalize the silly things your kid says or does.

Maybe the pregnant person is someone who uses they/them pronouns, or maybe your DD doesn't know them well enough to be sure about their pronouns? Why do you care, OP?

There is nothing incorrect about saying “pregnant person” or whatever, so what is the issue? Be glad your daughter is talking to you. Be sure to keep parsing and criticizing the words she chooses, and see where that gets you.

Asking again what "this" means in the sentence.

The majority of men and women in our country know it's absurd to talk about pregnant people and individuals instead of girls, women, mothers, moms, etc.
