Do you know why the U.S. will and should fight a war over Taiwan?

I’m just curious if any here know why that would be important to us?
I know one pp knows based on the answer on another thread.

My take: Same reason we're supporting Ukraine. To keep rival superpowers and adversaries in check.

Makes 80% of laptops and motherboards.

Maintains control of Strait of Taiwan, one of worlds most economically significant ports.

Taiwan is more important to us than Ukraine.

Now that said - if you get a Hitler esque, trying to take over a whole continent, trying to exterminate millions - yes we did the right thing, even at the cost of American lives. But not willing for my kids to die for Taiwan or the Ukraine.

$23M people live in Taiwan. Why should the rest of the world stand by and watch them get slaughtered and lose their freedom. We have seen over history how well appeasement works. What is happening in Hong Kong is bad enough. The world shouldn’t just sit and watch while the Russians and Chinese slaughter innocent countries.

What a naïveté! We would not fight to save lives, we would fight to save our economy. How is it that you are that naive? Do you read any academics? Or just watch CNN?

We are in the process of doing this, but we have to create several industries. We have to mine our own rare earth materials. We need to set up factories in the areas that used to have factories and are now ravaged by poverty, drugs, and resentment, and we have to figure out how to swallow the massive price increase that would come from insourcing this. There is no way around the fact that we are worse off without Taiwan.

We have genocides all the time, that isnt why we get involved. We wouldnt have gotten involved if Japan hadnt bombed Pearl Harbor. We get involved when we perceive an existential threat to a critical aspect of our security. China now controls too much-- chips, medicine, etc. They have us on our knees while they are ascendent. Read The Peloppenesian Wars, a classic military history piece, for why people think war with China is inevitable.
