Hi everyone! I previously got a really great tip here about providing high protein food to kids when the get hungry to sustain them longer. I'm so glad I saw that post, it worked well for my kids and kept their weight in check.
I need ideas for breakfast, my teens don't like cereal/oatmeal/avocadoes and prefer something warm in the am. I currently provide milk/chocolate milk, eggs/ egg white and bacon/sausage/ham. But I would like to cut down on the processed food and running out of ideas what to make for breakfast instead. I would like to keep a high protein content so it lasts until lunch. Any suggestions? |
Any suggestions beyond the numerous things you are already doing? I have a feeling you’ll shoot anything else down. Why do they “need” more options than that? |
I'm not sure of your definition of processed, since you are listing eggs and milk which I don't think of as that processed.
Here are some things that show up at breakfast at my house. Baked eggs in muffin cups with cheese and vegetables. Baked oatmeal muffins with nuts/nut butter mixed in Chilaquiles with black beans and a fried egg on top. Left over meat -- my kids are happy with a pork chop or a chicken leg from last night's dinner Bowl of Greek yogurt with fruit, and a piece of peanut butter toast on the side. Sandwich |
You can make a whole bunch of muffin tin frittatas or egg cups (basically cheese eggs bit of vegetables optional that you bake in muffin pans) and refrigerate them and micmicrowave as needed. |
My kids pretty much eat scrambled eggs and bacon every day-sometimes with cheese or veggies in the eggs and sometimes without. Sometimes regular bacon and sometimes turkey bacon, but it’s a lot of protein and fills them up for the whole day. |
Because it can get boring, so there are days when they don't want the eggs/milk. |
OP here. The processed part is the side of meat that comes in the meal like bacon, sausage, ham? I feel like it's too often if I'm serving it daily.

You can substitute smoked salmon for bacon and sausage. |
Thank you everyone! I have to google chilaques, but these are great! Keep them coming. |
We have a family member who needs low sodium so I make homemade turkey "sausage" patties that are just ground turkey and sausagey (I know that's not a word) herbs. Could you substitute other meats? My kids will eat left overs for breakfast. |
So just skip the breakfast meat most days. Eggs and milk is plenty of protein. Add some whole grain toast with peanut butter/nut butter if they want |
Eggs with toast and butter. Use Dave's Killer Bread. |
My tween has 2 eggs on a mini bagel most mornings. The bagel is 5g protein and the eggs are 6 each. That’s 17g which is fine imo. The bagel is processed so not sure that works for you but you can do a WG bagel for the whole grains/fiber which are also filling. She usually has fruit or tomatoes with it and a glass f almond milk or juice. |
My kids are obsessed with this egg sandwich technique:
Beat 2-3 eggs ina cup (depending on the aize of your bread/pan: Pour into a heated, greased frying pan so the eggs fill the bottom, tilt the pan as needed to ensure it covers the entire bottom of the pan in a thin layer. Lay two slices of bread on the pan like an open sandwich, cover to ensure the eggs cook all the way through. After a minute or so, flip the whole thing so it’s bread side down, cook that side for a minute so it’s toasty, then add a slice of cheese centered over one piece of bread. Fold any excess egg over the sides of the bread/cheese with the spatula, then fold the two slices of bread closed into a sandwich. |
OP - to offset my kids eating bacon every day, I always serve fruit with every breakfast.... |
