Should we start a list for the "hard to buy for" teen boy?
So far for DS16: Bombas socks, chocolate bombs, and a back scratcher for the stocking. Hoodie from Billabong (he likes the surfer/skater style) New Vans Video game for the xBox We're not going too crazy this year, so probably a few more clothing items and some fun snacks, books. |
|
I’ve got a 16 year old boy too. He wants a new graphics card for his PC. We’ll probably add sports gear - leg sleeves, batting gloves or similar - and then stocking stuffer kinds of things like hair product, candy, socks.
He doesn’t like books and doesn’t really care about clothes or accessories, so he gets a little hard to buy for. |
OP here- it's hard, when I was sixteen I could have gotten some make up, pjs, and stack of books Christmas. That would have made me happy. Minus the make up, it still would

Mine is 14 but is impossible. He plays xbox only on occasion, he already has a phone and other similar electronics. He doesn't need/want an update on any of those items (well, he wants a new iPhone but that's not happening). He doesn't care yet for clothes or shoes. He listens to audiobooks exclusively, which we get him with wild abandon. He doesn't like sports teams.
I was even considering a summer sleep away camp as a Christmas gift - like Space Camp or Travel for Teens. |
We realized what we were spending on audio books - and told my DD that she needed to use the library audio books and beyond that she got as a Christmas gift 1 book a month and if she wanted more she could use her allowance. A year later - she is using the library of 90% of her audio books. |

For my senior, college admission to his preferred college? If only! Books and video games, as usual. |
|
Hard to buy for 16 YO - getting the new retro Caps t shirt.
Tickets for a caps game (going to the outdoor game in North Carolina) |
|
My 16 year old wants a few ‘vinyls’ (records, in GenX speak)
New fancy keys and something related for his computer keyboard A new saxophone case He will also get some clothes including whatever Van tshirt strikes my fancy, some sunglasses, and a small bongo drum. |
SAME!! Would love nothing more than to hear about an ED acceptance and I can get them college swag. |
This, except for eBooks. We only get them from the library and have more than enough for my reading teens. I think our library allows 10 downloads at a time. For the family, that's 40 downloads at a time, which we use if we are going on vacation. (Then the kids have a ton to choose from.) |
Ha! The year my sister applied early decision to her first choice school, she got an acceptance in mid-december. She got a sweatshirt for that college under the tree that year and the gift tag said "To Larla, From God" She really didn't have anything else on her list! |
|
My 16 year old, who turns 17 right before xmas, would like 3 hoodies for xmas and his birthday. That is all.
We go through this every year....he's still working his way through last year's gift cards to Nando's and Five Guys from the grandparents. |
It's an ongoing battle. He has the Libby app and also access to Learning Ally (dyslexia) but is very attached to the "This is Audible" opener and the Audible interface. Even with the Audible subscription, he still occasionally asks for extra credits. Only he uses it because DH and I make sure we use Libby. Not to digress from the topic at hand. |

My 17 yo has asked for:
Museum hoodie (local DC brand) Wolves Among Sheep hoodie Some under armour and Nike gear Construction Timbs Black Guess bubble coat PS5 Beanie hat from some shop in Georgetown Uggs boots |
| By the time we hit high school, the only thing my siblings and I wanted was cash. My sister and I loved to go shopping for clothes with it the week after Christmas. |
