Parents of Color, How diverse is your school? Is it going well for your child socially and academic

In particular how racially diverse is your school. Black parents how has your child been doing at your private socially and academically.

My African American daughter is at an all girl’s school that says it’s 40-ish percent girls of color. She has had a great experience- she’s a senior this year. As can be expected there’s been some meanness but there’s been nothing that she (or I) thought was race related.

My daughter has a great group of friends of all races/ethnicities. There have been countless parties, sleepovers, trips, etc. Each year (until 11th and 12th) We’ve given her the option to stay or apply out. Each year she’s wanted to stay. She’s highly involved and loves most of her teachers. Fit is everything. Good luck!!

White parrot if a black daughter. She is only has 1 other black girl in her grade. She is doing well academically but is disappointed socially. Seems like most of the grade lives near each other in Chevy Chase. School is in DC and we live further north in MoCo.

Some black parents have not welcomed our family into the school community and specifically uninvited me from an event that was initially advertise for black students and their parents. DEI coordinator is inexperienced and overworked. It’s sad because the community could be really great. It’s a school that was founded to bring different kinds of students together.

You post a lot lately on the same subject. Have you gone to your admin on this yet?

1 in her entire grade. That's pitiful for the DC area. I read your other posts but now I see why they may have changed the invite. Black parents are severely underrepresented at this school and having "black space" is more important in this kind of environment.

My black DD goes to a Christian K-8 in moco. It’s majority black. There are some white/Asian/Indian kids but I would say most of the kids families are from different African countries originally. Her best friend at school was born here but her family is from Ghana. Another good friend, her parents are from Ethiopia..it’s interesting when you look beyond just the “ black” and learn that are from lots of different places.

The irony is you think its because you are white when in reality it’s because you are privileged and annoying.

Parent of a black HS kid at a popular DC school. Very happy with the diversity. They are prob close to 35-40% black and another 15-20% other students of color in kid’s grade and in HS. Kid feels welcome and doesn’t stand out. Has a very diverse group of friends. Would like to see a few more teachers of color at the high school level.
