Well, it is some people who decided to attribute such qualities to a god. I think people generally misunderstand theology. |
Most people never learn theology. They go to catechism or Sunday school where they learn that they must worship god. |
By who or what? |

| Because it doesn't ring true - there is no proof of a higher power. Awful things happen to people all the time whether they are religious or not. The Bible and other religious texts are full of utter hateful nonsense used to justify discriminating against women and the LGBTQ community. And if there was a higher power, who is to say which religion is right - they can't all be... |
| If God is our creator, then God is probably some advance alien civilization that has cracked the code of the universe and figured out how to create galaxies and possibly entire universes. Given then vastness of our universe, I'm convinced there is a Type V civilization (Kardashev scale) in our universe. Scientifically that is more of a realistic probability to me than the idea of a Christian God. |
Religious people have all these problems too. Why don't we ask why they believe? Do you believe in Santa too? |
Where is the documentation (from science) that many religious people suffer from psychosis? You have evidence to back that claim up? |
Sounds like the former nun is expressing her opinion, not citing scientific studies. |
Sounds like those who believe in the existence of God are suffering from delusions. Have you ever encountered a psychologically stable individual who believes in God? Sane people do not believe in spirits, ghosts, angels, demons, or the existence of God. There is something inherently troublesome with worshipping something that does not exist. |
What changed your mind? Most Christians I know have been raised to believe in God. Some question it, some don't. One in particular replaced drugs and alcohol with God. She's much better off now. Personally, I was raised to pay lip service to being a Christian and believing in God. We said Grace once/day and sat in church on Sunday. I agree that believing in God is a form of oppression. |
So you don’t believe in freedom to practice religion, or freedom to not practice religion. You believe your opinion and choice about religion is right, everyone else’s choice about religion is wrong, and not only are people who practice religion wrong, but they are all ignorant, psychotic, and delusional? |
I was perfectly sane when I believed in God and practiced a religion and I'm just as sane now that I don't. Sane people do crazy-seeming/odd things all the time. They may drink too much sometimes, or get romantically involved with someone whom all their friends tell them is wrong for them, etc., etc. Then they may change for the better. It doesn't mean they were insane. |
DP here. So you agree that PP is making a claim which is unsupported by evidence, and likely a false belief that they should NOT hold, and you are within your rights in this forum to tell PP that? Great, we have found common ground. |
This is the PP you are replying to. To me, evolution IS the design, not the designer. It's like saying the assembly line designed products to be like such and such. Someone designed the assembly line for inputs to go in and products to come out of it the way their design intended. |
