Yes. It’s like this every year, it’s a fun tradition!

It’s the cherry blossoms, the fall foliage, then the parental snow day tantrums.

Check the vdot plow map. https://plows.vdot.virginia.gov/public/map Most of McLean neighborhoods aren’t complete. Chantilly area hasn’t even started yet. Reston looks mostly done.

I've been trying to read this map for a while ... what is the blue line noting? Thanks!

I think (could be wrong) that just denotes a main road. I am not sure how you tell if they are done but I believe all main roads are done. For neighborhoods, click on the icon in the middle of the neighborhood. It will give a status.

I think blue roads are roads that still need to be plowed. Black roads have been plowed.

I don’t think so.

If you look at the map, all the neighborhoods have a little neighborhood icon. If you go to the top right, it has a neighborhood button. You can turn on and off the neighborhoods that are either 100% complete, Assigned, or Unassigned. I can't scroll out too far but, when I turn off the neighborhoods that are 100% Complete, I can see only one neighborhood disappear somewhere in Reston. All the neighborhoods like Oakton, McLean, Fairfax, Merrifield, Mantua, etc are still only "Assigned". All the neighborhoods in Chantilly that I can see aren't even assigned yet.

So when school is closed and there are kids, then someone has to take PTO for child care. Even where telework is a theoretical possibility, it can be hard or impossible to juggle that with child care.

Exactly as it was for our parents (no, maybe you were wealthy enough to have a SAHM, but many of us were not). They handled it. You can too,

Absolutely, but more broadly I think pre-covid the vast majority parents believed that teachers/school administrators were operating with the best interests of the the children at heart and were inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Post covid I think this is no longer the case and parents are far more inclined to question/challenge decisions on a wide spectrum of issues, including snow closures.

Yawn.

FWIW my neighborhood is "assigned" and has been drivable since this morning. I'm not sure how fast that map is updating, or what the criteria for completion is.

Bzzzt! Privilege card denied. This has been the reality of the working class forever. The difference is they suck it up, figure it out and handle it.

You…whine.

And apparently “complete” can mean one pass by a plow on Monday morning.

Did someone force them to have kids? They made a choice. Unselfish people consider work, finances, and life styles before having kids.

This is why the birthrate is declining in western societies and why people have kids at 50 if at all.

Blah blah blah.

Completion has to mean that a plow has driven through at the very least and either....plowed, spread sand, both, or determined it's ok without either. I don't think because people are driving on it means the couny determines it completed. It's a Snow plow map.

Different poster but yes, it is truly incredible to sleep until 10 on a snow day as a DINK family. To watch a movie, get in a great workout, a trip to the grocery store, and to make a gourmet meal with my husband, and then to still have a few hours to get in a few chapters in my book. I come here often to listen to you whine. It provides me with endless birth control as I wonder if you regret your life decisions. How hard it must be to stay home with your children and cherish the little time you have together before they are adults. Your job must be so important!

To all the parents posting urging a safety-first approach, thank you for your sanity and for also providing me hope in humanity.

You won't be so smug in around 10 years.

You wish.
