Snow day

So when school is closed and there are kids, then someone has to take PTO for child care. Even where telework is a theoretical possibility, it can be hard or impossible to juggle that with child care.

My level of outrage has greatly diminished now that I am allowed to telework instead of having to take PTO. I was more upset that the Fed got the day off and those of us who worked in a Fed building had to take PTO. Our contract did not allow us to make up the hours. If it had let us make up the hours, I would have been far less salty. But my complaints were normally stated that it was the forced PTO.

I was really salty when it was the case that there was no ice or snow or anything in our neighborhood and the mess in a few other places caused us to close.
look at opm's definition and who is allowed weather and safety leave before you start spouting incorrect information.

There are plenty of Government workers who cannot do their jobs via telework, like most of the ones that I work with. I am not sure what the outrage is for.

Check the vdot plow map. https://plows.vdot.virginia.gov/public/map Most of McLean neighborhoods aren’t complete. Chantilly area hasn’t even started yet. Reston looks mostly done.

I've been trying to read this map for a while ... what is the blue line noting? Thanks!

I think (could be wrong) that just denotes a main road. I am not sure how you tell if they are done but I believe all main roads are done. For neighborhoods, click on the icon in the middle of the neighborhood. It will give a status.

I’m from PWC in Dumfries area… hoping for another snow day! The roads are pretty clear in my neighborhood though they’re a bit icy and will definitely refreeze tonight…

Snow is melting on my street but is in puddles along the road. Almost certainly going to become a sheet of ice tomorrow.

The main roads in Reston and Herndon are fine. The side roads are slushy, at best, still snow covered at worst. They are going to be icy. The sidewalks had not been cleared by many of the homeowners in my neighborhood. Walkers are going to have a hard time. I did see some people out shoveling about 30 minutes ago, so hopefully that will be better but I have seen two bus stops that have not been touched.

The article I read today said Reston/Herndon had the least amount of snow and those areas still have messy roads and covered side walks.

Wrong forum. This is fcps specific

There is no way there is school tomorrow. Neighborhood roads are still either ice or rutty slush that will freeze solid tonight. I just walked past one the Elementary Schools. The parking lot lots great. However, the neighborhood roads in are treacherous.

I think blue roads are roads that still need to be plowed. Black roads have been plowed.

That is why they do the 2-hour delay - to give the ice on the roads some time to melt.

It looks like blue roads are ones VDOT is responsible for plowing. My community is not covered by VDOT (our HOA hires a private company to plow) and our street is not marked in blue. Purple denotes individual zones that a plow can be assigned to, lime green means a plow is assigned but hasn't actually completed the zone, green indicates they've plowed all the roads.

Another issue that seems to be popping up is that streets were marked as plowed sometime yesterday but we got a few inches of snow between when they were cleared and now. They're marked as done in the system but are not clear anymore.

It really is a mess.

Do you realize how incredibly few (and lucky) individuals whose career and income put them in an ideal position for parenting during every possible contingency?

That is like 3% of people. What do you think would happen if only those 3% were having kids?
