Teach for 10 years with a masters (and hope for semi regular step increases) and then you can make that.

But yeah, the bottom line is no one is going to fill these positions unless they increase pay significantly, which seems to be the one thing the county refuses to do. Things are going to get way worse before they get better unless pay scales change.

Former colleagues left this summer to do real estate, HR in construction, conference planning for a consulting company. All signed on to make at least $20k more than their experienced teacher salary.

No, the pay isn't the problem. The problem is stress, bad administration/micromanagement, and too little autonomy. Raising pay isn't going to retain stressed unhappy teachers.

The pay is a huge part of the problem. You can offset a ton of work related stress if you aren’t also worried about paying your bills.

This 100%. It’s miserable going from a high stress position where you’re disrespected by many to a house that you can’t afford to keep up.

I am really getting nervous now. We are still down 2 teachers on a 4 person team.

I would be interested to hear about any other jobs experienced teachers are finding outside of teaching. I’m planning my long term exit strategy. These sound interesting.

I feel bad for whoever went into real estate though, that's a career that's shaky now and likely to tank soon.

Yeah I wasn’t interested in that one. The HR or conference planning sounded interesting. I’m thinking of an early retirement in a couple of years then doing something else.

What is going to happen the next five years are the surrounding counties will be competing.

Something that I think would be super simple to implement would be to allow former teachers to come back at the step they left at. Right now the max entry step is 13, so if you had status but had to take time off to raise children or care for parents or move for spouse’s job, you can’t come back above step 13. You also can’t rejoin the old retirement system you were on. Those two things would make returning to FCPS (over a different county or career) more appealing.

There seems to be huge drop in the number of open positions. I’m not worried.

Last year everyone was worried about school closing again. Turns out not a single school closed or moved to virtual learning. This is the latest “the sky is falling” lol

Yawn.

This has always been the case. Teachers will show up. P

Scroll down to “teacher resident” and click through to get details. Basically anyone with a bachelors can be hired on a provisional license.

Fulfills classroom teacher duties while following a fast-tracked educational route to qualifying for and obtaining a VDOE teaching license; under general supervision from a school-based administrator, and working closely with FCPS instructional leadership, plans and provides relevant learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, the school’s curriculum, effective and engaging strategies, resources, and data to meet the needs of all students; gathers, analyzes, and uses data to monitor and evaluate student performance, guide instruction, and provide feedback to students and parents; provides a respectful, positive, safe, student-centered learning environment that considers the developmental needs of students; collaborates with colleagues/administrators/families and participates in professional growth activities that result in enhanced student academic achievement.

Come on everyone who said teaching is a cushy job! Come join us! Literally zero barriers to entry now!

Yet my DW who is certified through sixth grade and currently teaches advanced math in 6th can’t take a 7th grade math position until she passes the Praxis?

If you read, even these “residents” have to pass the praxis before starting.

I still haven't found where you read this.

Retirement is not affected if you left the money in the account. I took a year off and then came back to same plan.

It could be a good thing. Salary War will hopefully give teachers more money!

Could there be any incentive for retired staff to come back? I assume pension payments would have to be placed on hold?

Yeah, I doubt you’ll ever get retirees back. Our retirees who want to keep working go elsewhere to collect paycheck and pension.

Sorry, I misspoke. I meant that in order to get your provisional license you have to pass—assume that’s part of the rush of qualifications. I’m sure your spouse could teach a different subject/grade without qualifications for the diminished salary (though why she’d want to is a mystery)

What about going after a “6 in the middle” position? Several pk-6 teachers taught 6th grade at Poe when I was there. Holmes and Glasgow have it too.

No, it is not part of the process. You have to get your provisional by the end of the year. The way I read it, someone with a psych BA could go teach calculus. If they don’t pass the praxis, they just wouldnt come back the following year.
