Check out the new video. Paid leave was her signature legislation and truly makes a difference for people.

Yeah. Paid for by District businesses for employees most of whom are not District residents.

Going to guess the video leaves out her utter failure with regards to DOES oversight, which she has tried to hand-wave away.

I like her politics, but she's such a jerk I can't vote for her again.

Would never in a million years vote for her based on the behavior of her staff.

Who else would be eligible if the businesses are the ones paying the tax? If you live but don’t work in DC, then advocate to increase your personal income taxes to expand the benefit to cover residents that don’t work in DC.

This legislation has really hurt us, a child care center. We are actually going to have to close classrooms due to not having enough people to work, because so many are using this leave at once. It is wonderful to have a safety net for those who truly need it; however some people are using it for very interesting reasons including cosmetic surgery. People are actually looking for reasons to use it so they don't miss out on a 12 week vacation every year. One person has even taken legal custody of her adult child's new baby so that she can take family leave.

This is the reality of paid leave. There are consequences from employers being out for extended periods of time to care for children and family members.

Paid family leave has really been one of the most effective government programs in some time. How many programs have been able to lower costs while simultaneously expanding benefits? That is exactly what Silverman's program was able to do. Thanks to Silverman's efforts, DC finally joined other modern countries in offering paid family leave and other jurisdictions are beginning to follow DC's lead. We want effective and efficient government and that is exactly what Silverman has provided. Can anyone name McDuffie's or Bonds' signature legislation?

Jeff---care to respond directly to the real life experiences of a DC small business owner? Progressives like Silverman never care to hear about what happens to businesses in real life. If they did, they would craft legislation like this much more carefully. But Silverman, like Allen, Nadeau, etc. absolutely do not care to understand private sector economic realities.

Do you propose that we not have family leave because a few businesses might be inconvenienced? Many people have greatly benefited from paid family leave:

Do you want to tell Zach here that he shouldn't be staying home to care for his son? Do you want new mothers returning to work after two weeks because they can't afford to stay with their newborn child longer than that?

Employers will learn to adapt to paid family leave just as they have in other countries. If the small business owner's employees are abusing the system, she should report them. There are always a few who will take advantage of anything. It's not a good idea to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Unfortunately I will have to throw out 8 babies in a few weeks. I just got my 4th notice in 2 weeks that yet another caregiver will be taking 12 weeks of leave beginning next month. We struggled to stay open, to keep providing care and paychecks/benefits throughout the pandemic. I think I’m ready to pack it in. I don’t begrudge individuals who truly need the leave. This particular person was sure to enquire about whether she will still be eligible for her Child Care Equity Fund payment while out on leave, otherwise she would put her leave off. This will be her second DCPFL stint, as it renews yearly. She is a DC resident though! I’m sure the market will figure this all out, I just can’t do it anymore. I’m too tired.

Have you considered notifying authorities now that you have told people who don't care?

Fail to see why our council member's signature project helping MD and VA residents when we have people in such dire straits in DC should be touted by her. MD and VA have extensive resources to give their own residents leave. This is policy over people of the worst sort
