Poll: dinner out or dinner at home?

Anonymous
If hanging out with another family, would you prefer to be invited to a dinner out to a restaurant, or dinner at their home?

I’ll answer first. I prefer dinner out. Why?

Because what if I or the kids don’t like the food they cook? More options at a restaurant. I’d be much more worried about manners, and things like that. And also I’d feel obligated to return the favor.

If taking kids I’d rather eat at their home. It just feels more relaxed. I’m happy with ordering pizza and I’ll bring a dessert though so doesn’t have to be a lot of effort.

Home. I love seeing what people cook, relaxing over a cocktail, etc. Restaurants are kind of loud and boring.

Depends if I like their cooking. I am friends with a professional chef whose cooking I literally never like. I’m friends with others whose cooking I really enjoy.

Home. I just can't be as relaxed at a restaurant. As for food, we usually do takeout so you can always blame it on the restaurant if it doesn't turn out well.

Always dinner at home. Kids can take off and play.

I hate disruptive kids in a restaurant.

Depends on how old the kids are. But I generally prefer restaurants because they are easier for everyone - no cooking or cleaning or host stressing out - and they have a natural end point.

Obviously home dinners have the benefit of being less rushed and more casual.

Always dinner at home. I really don’t like restaurants and I think we should have a babysitter if we’re there. I don’t want to have to entertain my kids nonstop. At someone’s house they can go play or watch a movie after dinner.

Are you paying for everyone? I’d likely decline if invited to a restaurant. I’m just not interested. Also my kids are really little and it’s difficult and not relaxing. We only go to restaurants on vacation and we much prefer to eat at home.

Since you said relaxing over a cocktail makes the night more enjoyable, how do you feel if the hosts don’t have alcohol in the house and only offer tea, sparkling water, lemonade, etc?

Always home. I’m fine if the host wants to order takeout though - I just feel more relaxed and less rushed in someone’s home. Also I’ve never had a problem with someone serving food we didn’t like.

Dinner at home, definitely. More comfortable.
