Whitman and BCC differences/pressure cooker

Anonymous
Any noted differences between the two? Is one more stressful? College outcomes seem pretty identical. Thanks from parent moving into Mongomery County.

BCC has an IB program whereas Whitman has only APs. BCC has an open campus for lunch. Whitman doesn’t. BCC is located within walking distance of downtown Bethesda and nearby restaurants. Not so for Whitman. Whitman is a pressure cooker academically. I am guessing BCC is similar that way.

Whitman parent here. Knowing what we know now, if we had been zoned for BCC, we would have considered private. Haven’t heard great things about BCC and my kids have had an incredible experience at Whitman.

PP: I should add that we’re not pressure cooker parents.

That's a pretty extreme take on BCC for a school with a good reputation but also extremely vague...what do you "know now?"

This is the chef’s kiss to a ridiculous post!

No, BCC is not similar that way. BCC is not a pressure cooking school at all.
Whitman and Wootton take the cake when it comes to pressure cooking schools.

Parent of a recent BCC grad here. We've had a very good experience with the school. Kid is super chill, so not inclined to 'pressure cooker' issues but never experienced them at BCC. Socially it was a good experience - my kid was not obviously part of any particular clique but made great friends and was very happy at school.

This is all right except maybe the last bit. BCC is somewhat more economically diverse and is generally considered a little less of a pressure cooker.

My kid had a good experience at BCC and I was happy with the education they got (and the college they ended up at).

It’s sad people traffic in cliches like “pressure cooker” when they are often self-serving euphemisms. It’s frequently just code used to whites to refer with schools with more Asian kids.

Or it’s because we know kids who had a nervous breakdown after getting into an Ivy

The differences between MCPS schools is pretty minor. They all offer more or less the same classes and draw from the same pool of teachers. Every school is large enough that a kid can find their niche. I wouldn't really worry about this stuff and just live in the area you like best.

I am looking for a pressure cooker school with some diversity. Challenging for my child. So is Whitman therefore better than BCC? Is Whitman diverse though?

Seriously? Whitman is leading the county in incidents the past few years. crew coach? Cross country coach? frying pan man, etc

As a graduate of Whitman, I purposely didn't buy in that school district. The bottom line is Whitman people don't wan their kids going to school with people of color. Sure Whitman has a few but they are kids of embassy kids or high earners. Not single parents who live in apartments like Summit Hills and are the first in their family to graduate high school and possibly go to college. The diversity at Whitman simply doesn't exist and never has.

They parents hide behind their liberal views but when it comes to anything potentially changing like business low income kids in they put up a huge fight.

I am a parent at BCC and have another child in a "selective" private. The child at BCC is just as capable (if not more in some ways) as my other child but wanted a different experience. I think the experience my child is having at BCC is a great one. No school is perfect. We live in difficult times right now.

It depends on the kid if the experience at BCC is pressure cooker or not. My child wants to take hard classes. Some of their friend don't take all the APs or do the full IB. There is a mix of students, however they have a lot of freedom to flex their independence, practice making choices for themselves(good ones, I hope) and have many options to get involved and can have different friend groups at BCC. These are very important life experiences for HS students in my opinion. I can't speak to what things might be like at Whitman since I have no personal connection there. (If I went on what "I heard" I would tell you that Whitman needs more racial and economic diversity and is full of misplaced entitlement, but don't base life decisions off of hearsay.)

Most schools in this area are what the child/family makes of them. We like that BCC is so close to downtown Bethesda. It reduces the need for a car and my kid can walk there with friends after Homecoming, or a sports game, etc. We have been very happy with the parent body at BCC as well. Interesting, thoughtful and respectful families over all. At BTSN this fall we were impressed with our child's teachers.
Good luck in your decision, OP.
