Whitman parent here. Knowing what we know now, if we had been zoned for BCC, we would have considered private. Haven’t heard great things about BCC and my kids have had an incredible experience at Whitman.
I am a parent at BCC and have another child in a "selective" private. The child at BCC is just as capable (if not more in some ways) as my other child but wanted a different experience. I think the experience my child is having at BCC is a great one. No school is perfect. We live in difficult times right now. It depends on the kid if the experience at BCC is pressure cooker or not. My child wants to take hard classes. Some of their friend don't take all the APs or do the full IB. There is a mix of students, however they have a lot of freedom to flex their independence, practice making choices for themselves(good ones, I hope) and have many options to get involved and can have different friend groups at BCC. These are very important life experiences for HS students in my opinion. I can't speak to what things might be like at Whitman since I have no personal connection there. (If I went on what "I heard" I would tell you that Whitman needs more racial and economic diversity and is full of misplaced entitlement, but don't base life decisions off of hearsay.) Most schools in this area are what the child/family makes of them. We like that BCC is so close to downtown Bethesda. It reduces the need for a car and my kid can walk there with friends after Homecoming, or a sports game, etc. We have been very happy with the parent body at BCC as well. Interesting, thoughtful and respectful families over all. At BTSN this fall we were impressed with our child's teachers. Good luck in your decision, OP.
