Why do the English Royals look so old?

Anonymous
Let me preface this by saying I think Queen Elizabeth looked good for her age, but Camilla and Princess Anne look very old. King Charles also. I remember looking at Kate a few years ago and thinking she had too many wrinkles for her age. I thought given their rainy climate and the fact that they always wear hats would shield them from aging as fast. They also have money which they obviously aren’t using for skincare. I have been to Europe but not the UK. Do the people of the UK typically age fast? I am in my 70s and my relatives in their 90s look younger than Camilla, Princess Anne, and King Charles.

They just aren’t having plastic surgery like other celebrities so your perspective is disordered. I think Kate finally started using Botox a few years ago.

Also some of them were smokers (Kate) and big sunbathers too in their youth.

Camilla is 75. She looks 75, but not older.

I think part of it is that for the women, the British aristocrat aesthetic is very old fashioned in its styling. The hair, makeup, and dress is very dowdy starting from a young age (basically once you marry, or once you hit your thirties). Foundation and setting powder, which emphasizes wrinkles and fine lines. Updos and “set” hair that has been curled and sprayed with hairspray. Pantyhose. Low heeled shoes. Suits and dresses that are tailored for boxier fits. This is what is considered appropriate for a senior royal of a certain age and it has barely changed in 70 years.

I always feel Camilla looks younger than most royals her age because, while not a trend setter or anything, she wears her hair in a more natural way and wears fabrics that are less stiff. She also smiles a lot and seems more relaxed and less concerned by the Publix’s perception of her. I think partly the result of joining the family much later in life, and partly the result of being the well known “other woman” for most of her life before formally marrying Charles. She has few f***s left to give.

I think part of the perception that the Queen looked “good for her age” is that she leaner harder into this mumsy look from a much younger age. It aged her in her 30s and 40s but made her feel timeless in her 80s and 90s because we’d all become so accustomed to her hairstyle and little suits and hats. I am 42 and QEII has looked pretty much the same my entire life. It’s actually kind of crazy to me to realize that when I was a kid, she was only in her 50s! She dressed like an 80 yr old.

Anne will never change but it will be interesting to see if Catherine starts paving her own way— she’s been really following the script this far. But without Elizabeth’s approval to need (Camilla is not going to wield the same expectations, plus obviously doesn’t have them anyway). I’m especially wondering if Catherine will ever cut her hair. Usually royals are discouraged from major style shifts but it’s very hard to maintain hair that long and keep it looking good snd youthful past 50.

Catherine/Kate is also (very) skinny - and that’s one of the fastest ways to age once you’re over 30/35, especially if you don’t mitigate with Botox early. I’ve seen it in a lot of my friends as we hit 35/40/45.

Typically, I know there are several 55 year old, 5’10”, size 2 DCUMers who look 30, so don’t come at me.

I also think how old someone looks at 70/80/90 is very much driven by genetics. Prince Philip looked older than the Queen (even accounting for age differences).

Charles and Camilla are old! 75. Average age Of death is 77 or something. They just don’t get Botox like everyone you see on tv here.

What? Because they’re super old. 75 is old. It’s not the “new fifty” or some other bs. Most people still die in their 80s. At 75, you could easily go at any time and it would not be surprising.

Poor Philip looked like a crypt walker.

It's in your head - they all look amazing for their ages. And I can't stand anyone in that family

They are rich, but not really. Can you imagine the scandal if Camilla got plastic surgery?

Also, it's in the genes. William was considered hot in his 20s and then he lost all his shaggy blonde hair and we're just left with the nose and ears. It happened so fast, and I think he was hesitant to do anything dramatic bc he would have been eaten alive in the press.

William. Case in point. It’s the genes and lack of plastic surgery etc.

They look like normal aging humans. Americans are conditioned to the fake plastic non-aging look of most American celebrities.

Its amazing how much Americans aren't used to seeing women in photographs or on TV who haven't had tons of work done.

The gene pool in the royal family isn't that great in the looks department. Princess Diana injected some looks, but she's one person in the gene pool. MM also has injected some looks into that family, but time will tell.

The older English people are largely dowdy. My spouse is English, and we go to the UK a lot. The younger generation is much more fashionable, and some of that is due to social media influence.
