I'll take students over the parents any day, after seeing where a certain group of parents got us. We have teachers quitting left and right after horrendous treatment from those parents, there are no subs, we have too much sickness and absenteeism in the schools, schools are removing sensitive content and trans kids' rights are under attack again. |
I posted earlier and am not in a "camp" |
I don’t understand why you think this has anything to do with “camps.” Why can’t we just have opinions? Why do you keep trying to divide us??? |
Dp. I think Miranda had this idea last time she ran. |
Here is APE's latest post on FB. Hardly a radical organization.
Advocacy update: Several APE members met with Diane Kresh, the head librarian, this morning as follow-on to APE’s letter to the County Board asking for more resources and programming from the Libraries and DPR to address the literacy and mental health crises. We had a FANTASTIC meeting with Diane and another librarian. Arlington VA Public Library has a lot of great ideas for teen and youth programming and spaces, and it was a productive brainstorming session. APE strongly advocated for a reading tutoring program and the librarians were very receptive. APE will continue to advocate for County resources to support our kids and to close the literacy gap in this County. If you’re interested in this work or more information, please let me know! |
I'm the one who said student reps were largely ornamental. I am not associated with Miranda at all. Part of no camp.
I do think it's a gimmicky idea from the 22 year old. He's basically campaigning on youth because that's all he's got. |
sure she did. |
He is also bringing positivity. Not YEARS of disturbing baggage. |
this is an excellent idea. Drew has implemented a program for reading tutoring that uses proven phonics techniques. If the libraries can provide space and help recruit tutors and provide the materials out of their budget that would be huge. Btw did you know that the Head of the library system in Arlington is one of the highest paid county employees? A couple years ago she was making over $200K. |
It's definitely not a gimmicky idea. Fairfax has had student reps for 20 years I think and Alexandria City most definitely has had them for years. It's kind of shocking that Arlington does not. |
they wouldn't be a voting member either would student reps. |
Does Fairfax have a student advisory board with reps from each school that the chair meets with monthly? Or do they just have the rep? Maybe different places do things differently? |
IDK answer to your question. NP, just want to comment that I think the student advisory board APS has is a much better thing than having a student rep on the SB. More students have a direct voice through the advisory board, more schools are represented. If they want to appoint someone from the advisory board to represent the board at SB meetings, I think that would be a good additional thing to do. That student could "remind" the Board of any points on issues that come up during the meeting, serve as a visible reminder of the students and their positions, make students more visible to the community as well. |
I didn't know about student advisory board. I like the idea. Would be good to hear from them more often. Indifferent about non-voting member because it seems more performative than a value add. What teenager wants to sit through 2-4 hour SB meetings every other week? |
He's bringing positivity for his own personal political career interests and ambitions. He's giving frosting, no cake. He has offered no substance and is not well-versed in Arlington, let alone APS. |
