I'm the one who said student reps were largely ornamental. I am not associated with Miranda at all. Part of no camp. I do think it's a gimmicky idea from the 22 year old. He's basically campaigning on youth because that's all he's got.
It's definitely not a gimmicky idea. Fairfax has had student reps for 20 years I think and Alexandria City most definitely has had them for years. It's kind of shocking that Arlington does not.
Does Fairfax have a student advisory board with reps from each school that the chair meets with monthly? Or do they just have the rep? Maybe different places do things differently?
IDK answer to your question. NP, just want to comment that I think the student advisory board APS has is a much better thing than having a student rep on the SB. More students have a direct voice through the advisory board, more schools are represented. If they want to appoint someone from the advisory board to represent the board at SB meetings, I think that would be a good additional thing to do. That student could "remind" the Board of any points on issues that come up during the meeting, serve as a visible reminder of the students and their positions, make students more visible to the community as well.
I didn't know about student advisory board. I like the idea. Would be good to hear from them more often. Indifferent about non-voting member because it seems more performative than a value add. What teenager wants to sit through 2-4 hour SB meetings every other week?
