Here is APE's latest post on FB. Hardly a radical organization. Advocacy update: Several APE members met with Diane Kresh, the head librarian, this morning as follow-on to APE’s letter to the County Board asking for more resources and programming from the Libraries and DPR to address the literacy and mental health crises. We had a FANTASTIC meeting with Diane and another librarian. Arlington VA Public Library has a lot of great ideas for teen and youth programming and spaces, and it was a productive brainstorming session. APE strongly advocated for a reading tutoring program and the librarians were very receptive. APE will continue to advocate for County resources to support our kids and to close the literacy gap in this County. If you’re interested in this work or more information, please let me know!
this is an excellent idea. Drew has implemented a program for reading tutoring that uses proven phonics techniques. If the libraries can provide space and help recruit tutors and provide the materials out of their budget that would be huge. Btw did you know that the Head of the library system in Arlington is one of the highest paid county employees? A couple years ago she was making over $200K.
