which is more difficult to get in: Cornell vs Northwestern

Anonymous
Which one (art and science school of Cornell and Northwestern) is more difficult to get in from top DC private schools? Thanks.

They're probably about equal in terms of selectivity, though I'd probably think Northwestern is slightly harder to get into. FWIW Cornell's acceptance rate is around 10.7%, Northwestern's is around 7%.

I agree they are both equally selective. Cornell arts and science is around 7%. With Cornell, you apply directly to a college and they all have different criteria. Hence, the blended, overall acceptance rate for Cornell does not mean much.

+1 Cornell has a hospitality school, that labor relations school which are all higher acceptance rates, but they're all Cornell, so people conflate them with Arts and Sciences which is more selective.

What is the acceptance rate for Northwestern's agriculture school?

i think northwestern.
It's crazy popular at the DC privates and almost no one gets in.
Last year zero from NCS, one at STA (URM), zero at GDS. A couple from Sidwell but i don't know if they had hooks.

In contrast, quite a few from Cornell. Although to be honest, most if not all had hooks.
NCS: 3 (one legacy, two URM)
STA 2 (one URM, one with no hooks)
GDS 2 (one legacy, not sure of the other)
Sidwell I don't know.

I had an NCS senior and knew this grade really well at STA and GDS.

Cornell is very numbers-based (test/gpa) in admissions, whereas Northwestern seems to be looking for particular types of students.

Just a thought…Cornell favors legacies and there are more Cornell alum in DC

Cornell is an Ivy League school. Northwestern isn't.

Ok? Northwestern is a Big Ten school. Cornell isn’t.

Or wait, I know — Northwestern is a top ten school. Cornell isn’t.

Come on, you know they’re both excellent. This kind of navel-gazing at this level of school is just boring.

Interesting to note that--until recently--Cornell University used to get its Presidents from Big Ten schools. Cornell is much more like the typical Big Ten school than it is an Ivy. Other than Northwestern, almost all Big Ten schools have a college of Agriculture.

Northwestern considered joining the Ivy League in the 1980s, but decided against it due to travel distance for athletic events. Northwestern University is more like an Ivy League school than a Big Ten school. (Once Stanford joins the Big Ten, Northwestern will have a similar school companion in the Big Ten Conference.

Cornell University is a hybrid public/private school. Northwestern University is a private school.
