I would never say this, but I kind of feel bad for Larry Hogan

I never voted for him but know plenty of Democrats who did. I disagreed with him on things like Beltway widening and police, but commended his generally pro-science and non-gaslighting approach to the pandemic and he generally has avoided the culture wars. He's been a critic of Trump, denounced Dan Cox and said he won't vote for him, and has generally made out to be one of the more sane Republicans in the country.

So I kind of feel bad for him should he care about his legacy. His establishment pick lost and the Trump QAnon crazy candidate won. And he has ZERO chance in the 2024 GOP primary. Zero chance. (I'm writing this because I just read the WaPo power rankings for the Republican Party post-Trump). He has no political future, despite being a common-sense, get-stuff-done, social moderate and pro-business Republican who can win in blue states. I think he'd make a fine president, who I probably wouldn't vote for because of my more left-leaning economic views, but he'd be competent and less embarrassing on the international stage. Yes, the bar is so low I would be happy with a President who is not an international embarrassment.

So what is Hogan's future? Go back to real estate? Become a talking head on MSNBC or CNN? Again, I'm a Democrat, but America would be so much better if there were more Larry Hogans in national politics.

I agree. I voted for him both times -- the only R I voted for. He's a moderate Republican and a good balance in MD.

I'm guessing he'll either end up running for US Senator at some point, or he'll make a run for president in 2028.. but 2028 he has less name recognition/memory than now, and he'll be up against a strong field each time.

I don't feel bad at all. He is against abortion. He is a decent person, but that doesn't give him the right to a legacy or to continued success. Just like anyone else, he has to reinvent himself. Why would he get preferential treatment compared to the average person?

Yeah, I hear ya. I am a left leaning Independent and I'd definitely vote for him. I prefer him over Biden and certainly more than some of the crazies on the right

What's wrong with saying what you wrote OP? I see nothing wrong. Hope your families and friends are not that narrow minded.

Why feel sorry for him? What a strange response. He's an accomplished man.

Because he's not the average person. He's accomplished a lot. Most average people don't run a state.

The establishment pick lost because of shadow campaigns from Democrats that poured MILLIONS of dollars into promoting him. Also, the only people that talk about Trump and AQnon this much are democrats. I’m a republican and never hear chatter about either of these things.

Outside of the DMV I think he will have a chance, but needs to start getting his name out there. People want moderate candidates that aren’t a gazillion years old.

I like him. Too bad we are losing Republicans like him.

I feel bad for Maryland, and ultimately the USA. Another nut job state going to Trump. Such a nightmare.

When he killed the red line in Baltimore, he lost my respect.

But worse, he steered his policies to benefit his financial and real estate interest.

So...while he may not be Trumpy, he isn't squeaky clean, either.

Not true. A bit of democratic money did not sway this. There is a real problem that the republican base has gone nuts. Crazy worshippers of a childish authoritarian.

I do not feel sorry for Larry Hogan. I feel sorry for the people of Ukraine, of women who are raped/incest who can't get abortions, children being abused, animals being mistreated..so many more people than Larry! He is going to be JUST FINE.

You don’t need to feel bad, at least not yet. We’re a heavily Democratic state overall. The chances of the state “going to Trump” are quite low, if by that you mean the Governor’s office.
