Rewatching The Americans

PSA moved from Amazon Prime to Hulu but it’s been my insomnia show for the last month and wow it holds up to a re-watching. So good.

Wish they'd do a reunion ep.

Yeah it is a terrific show. I loved that. I watched it with my DH when it first aired and then last year with one of my kids who was finally old enough.

It's my go to rewatch show. It's filled with tiny details that I previously missed

Oh, good to know. I've been waiting until I forget some of it so I can rewatch with fresh eyes. It'll be a good binge. I watched it as it aired, and the story was complex enough that binging would be better.

DH and I loved The Americans. We've been wondering what Phillip and Elizabeth would think of Putin.

It was amazing. I also think Keri Russel is underappreciated as an actor. It's like she's too pretty to be taken seriously.

Well, they'd be in their 80s now, so probably wouldn't care as they sit on their tropical island retirement home somewhere far outside of Russia.

It'd be fascinating to see how they adjusted to being back in the Soviet Union and the changes since then.

One of the most memorable scenes in the series for me was a debate they had about which country was better. I think Philip was enjoying a new car, and Elizabeth was judging his enjoyment of a material possession. Philip said something about how the U.S. lifestyle was obviously better, and Elizabeth shot back, "It may be nicer, but it's not better!" She was a true believer.

I think she'd be pretty horrified at the rise of the oligarchy and Putin's regime. They were used to corruption but could at least excuse it away because of the larger communist/"egalitarian" system. Can't do that with Russia today. (Despite the fact that so many Americans still seem to think that Russia is socialist.)

With the invasion of Ukraine, I can imagine Philip trying to talk Elizabeth into leaving Russia. They were in the U.S. long enough to appreciate that everything the regime was telling them about it was a pack of lies, and they surely would be using a VPN to get the truth about the massive, constant war crimes the Russians were committing. Elizabeth had had a "aha" moment when she realized that scientist was creating a wheat variant that would actually help Russia grow enough food for their people, and it wasn't a biological warfare attempt to further starve Russians, as she'd been told by Moscow. I think that started to shift her assessment of the two countries a bit.

Good to hear! It's one of my top two series ever, along with Mad Men.

oh bummer--I was thinking about rewatching this but just stopped my Hulu subscription...

Hmmm, I may have to watch this. I stopped around season 3, I think. We gave up cable at that time, and I kind of forgot about it. I know how it ends because I watched the clip on YouTube. Definitely a good show.

I recently rewatched it, and it was actually better, because knowing what happened meant that I could spot all the clues and things that happened earlier in the show that didn't pay off until later in the season or even in subsequent seasons. It definitely holds up.

Just started to binge a rewatch. The pilot was fantastic, better than I remembered.

Now in episode 2, when the story moves into the Rezidentura, I discover that Hulu hasn't captioned the Russian dialogue! Grrrrrr. . .
