| We know someone who was admitted to Northeastern but is spending freshman year at their CA campus. Can anyone tell me more about this? Is it an option or is it mandatory for some students? |
| Seems like another NEU gimmick. Probably just another way to squeeze as much tuition money as it can from students. |

They got in through the NUiBound program. Students have to spend the first year either abroad or at NEU’s new campus in Oakland, which they have rebranded as “Bay Area” My DD got into NE for the NUin program which is first semester abroad. We didn’t think she should go abroad so looked into the Oakland campus. Basically, Northeastern bought Mills College, a defunct Womens college. The campus looked nice but not the surrounding area. There are some nice parts of Oakland but this is not one of them.
The other thing they do is not let you pick where you spend the semester/year until you put down a deposit. DD seriously considered NEU but by the time she was ready to commit, all the places she wanted to spend the semester (London, Rome) we’re full and she didn’t want to end up in Oakland. She picked a different school. |
| Californian native here who grew up in the east bay in Danville. Mills College and area isn’t nearly as bad as the previous poster makes it seem. Also, it actually is the east bay….no quotations needed. |

It's basically a guaranteed transfer program.
There are many similar programs. For example, Emory has Oxford campus admission guaranteed transfer to the main campus in Atlanta in the 3rd year. |
That setup is very different from NUbound/NUin. |
in what way |
They were accepted to NUBound, which is mandatory study abroad/mills college all of freshman year. Freshman are accepted to either Boston campus (typical experience), NUIn (fall semester abroad/other campus and move to Boston spring freshman year) or NUBOund (spend full first year abroad/at Mills college depending upon major and become a transfer student fall 2nd year). You can NOT switch and must attend the program you are admitted to. |
? - They admit you only for Oxford campus. - Take it or leave it. - If you take it, you are guaranteed to transfer to the Atlanta main campus in your 3rd year. That setup is exactly the same. |
I only used quotes b/c NEU was originally calling Oakland then decided it needed to be rebranded as “Bay Area” |
+1 And I think they call it their "San Francisco" campus on their website - is that accurate, or is it actually Oakland? DP |
Its 15 min from UC Berkeley. Berkeley had some kind of partnership with Mills College, and there was talk about UCB taking over it but Northeastern ended up buying it out. |
| Just wait…NEU will keep buying more franchise locations. If you aren't near NEU you will soon be. 200K applicants soon. Top 10 Univ very soon. Love their no-nonsense education. Watch out ivies...here we come. |
Say it with me folks…it is NU or simply, Northeastern, not NEU. https://brand.northeastern.edu/resources/key-terms-style/ |
It's in Oakland. I live about 20 minutes form there. The campus is beautiful. When my DD spoke to them at a college fair (still Mills College then), they made sure to tell her it was fenced and gated. She laughed and said she couldn't go to college there because it was closer to our house than her high school in the city. The area around it varies. There is quite a bit of property crime. Would I be excited to send my kid all of the way from the east coast to Northeastern in Oakland? Honestly, no. But keep in mind, I went to school in Boston when Northeastern was a mediocre commuter school so I struggle to shake that reputation form my memory. I'd love to see it succeed. It would be great for that area. |
