Did you feel safe in the DR?

Anonymous
Our friends recommended a great family all-inclusive there and I trust them that it was good. My husband is just hung up on the fact that it’s in the DR. Should we be concerned going there?

No.

This was 10 years ago, but as soon as we got off the plane in our way to the resort we saw a guy riding a motorcycle with a machine gun strapped to his back. The resort was an obnoxious disney for adults vibe and the staff walked back and forth to their dorm carrying big chef's knives for protection.

Worst destination wedding ever. I can’t fathom people who enjoy traveling this way.

We haven’t been in a few years but we always felt perfectly safe. I will say we stayed in Punta Cana and didn’t leave the resort because there wasn’t much nearby we wanted to do but traveling to the resort from the hotel and on the resort property was perfectly fine.

OP here. We would fly into Punta Cana and would be staying in the Cap Cana area which says its "gated" whatever that means. We would not have any plans to leave the resort. I'm feeling conflicted based on things you head about DR and yet the absolutely glowing reviews this resort receives on Trip Advisor and that fact that it isn't cheap. And it appears to have a significant amount of repeat visitors. Its exactly what we've been looking for apart from the location.

I think Punta Cana has mastered providing resorts that people don't want to/can't leave. Most of them are so spread out, that there is nothing to do outside of the gates anyways.

It's not my type of vacation (to only see the resort), but we have a number of friends who love it, say it's very relaxing and plenty of entertainment.

I would try it. The entire Punta Cana area was purpose built to attract and support tourism and then the Cap Cana area is closed off and the individual resorts are also limited access. I am not sure what things you have heard about the DR but chances are they are not at all applicable to a Cap Cana resort.

I just got back from a different all inclusive in Punta Cana. We hired a shuttle service to and from ahead of time for $150 round trip super easy and safe.

OMG, OP. An all-inclusive in the DR is perfectly safe. In fact, the DR in general has one of the lower crime rates in Latin America and one of the lowest murder rates.

Tell your husband to grow a pair. He's less safe in the USA probably.

Machine gun? Really? There is no way this is true. Long gun? Sure, lots of security guards there carry those. But machine gun? No.

Right, because God forbid you actually go to a developing country and experience life there beyond the walls of a gated compound. Clearly you just want to enjoy a nice beach without being bothered by the locals. Stay home OP. Please!

I remember years ago we were leaving the gated compound where we had dinner in our rental car, and security tried to stop us from leaving! They had to call the front desk for authorization. Not sure what their plan was since we weren’t staying there! Kind of funny, but guess what? We drove two hours further in the dark to the place we actually were staying and everything was fine! The PP who said OP’s husband needs some cojones is right.

Thats literally why the build the resorts like they do and they do it for the tourism dollars.

Do they? The staff who had to leave the resort certainly had their heads on a swivel.

Enjoy waddling around clutching your cheap watered down margarita with the other lobster-red sunburned Americans.
