Did you feel safe in the DR?

I love the DR and have been several times, both on and off resorts. It’s a poor country to be sure, so you have to be able to say no to people trying to sell you stuff. The resorts are totally safe. If you want to venture off the resort, you may want to find (and pay, of course) someone to be your guide and drive you around or get you around. Overall I find Dominicans to be very friendly and helpful.

Here you go - read and decide for yourself:

Perhaps a better question is why you'd choose a 3rd world destination with all the potential health and safety issues associated with that characterization over 1st world alternatives, unless you're financially constrained in the face of an overwhelming desire for a beach vacation.

You sound ridiculously small minded.

Have been twice and always felt safe. We even ventured off resort a couple times and had no issues. Punta Cana is a top tourism destination for the island (and brings in alot of $$) so thats what they cater to. The government has a vested interest in trying to keep it as safe as possible for tourists.

Just returned from Club Med Punta Cana. It was also a resort within a property that contained a series of resorts. Felt safe the entire time. Did not leave the resort, but did not care to. The resort also arranged transportation to and from the airport. If this sounds similar to your vacation plans, you should not have any concerns.

Not a clue. Stayed at the Hamilton Princess years ago pre-kids. Perfectly safe to leave the hotel and explore the island.

Really? In Bermuda? Wow! I never would have guessed it was that safe!

It is safe until it isn’t. Like someone broke into Supreme Court justice’s Caribbean vacation home. The man was armed with a machete. I have interest in going to DR, Haiti or Jamaica, regardless of how cheap it is.

Have you looked at the list of countries with a level 2 travel advisory from the state department? France is there, for one. Should people also avoid France?

So basically you have nothing to add.

The DR seems no less safe than most other areas of the world. I would go as far as to say it's safer than LA, SF, Seattle, Chicago, and NYC right now.

We were going to go in 2019 and then there was that weird story about the woman assaulted on her way down to get a drink or snack within the hotel complex. She was missing and neither the hotel nor the police had any interest in helping her husband find her…they told him she was probably drunk somewhere. She had been dragged to a basement and left for dead.
We were going with teen girls that like to have some freedom within a resort area so it made me nervous. We ended up going to Jamaica instead. We’ve also been to Mexico, Aruba, Puerto Rico, etc. my dad got lost in a resort in Mexico and the staff was out looking for him immediately.

Adding that there are safe islands to visit where you can leave the resort without being afraid.
