Please forgive my cluelessness as this is a new, recent pain, and I’m trying to figure out wtf this is.
On Sunday, I went for a run. All of the sudden, 2 miles in, my left inner heel starts hurting. It went from 0-60 in about 2 minutes. It had never hurt before. I turn around and walk home - still painful but not as sharp when running. 2 days later, the site is still swollen and rather painful. I’m not new to running or exercise, and this popped up totally out of the blue. Is this how plantar fasciitis starts? 🙁 |
I have had plantar fasciitis flare ups over the years. I don't ever remember my foot being swollen. For me the pain is more in my arches than my heel. I think it could be something different.
Make sure you are stretching your hamstrings and wear shoes with good arch support all the time (do not go barefoot). If it is PF, this will start to help your foot feel better. |
When I had PF, it hurt more in the mornings after a run than during. |
I too have had PF before and it never started hurting during a run. It always hurt more in the morning/when not warmed up. It actually always felt fine during a run because things were warmed up which wasn't a good thing because I paid the price later.

This was what it was like for me too. In addition to hurting in the morning and in the beginning of runs (when not as warmed up yet too), by the end of the day after any runs, I'd be limping in pain when I walked. This was fairly recently, less than a year ago. I did not stop running although that's what my doctor told me to do. However, I was very diligent about the stretches (I just googled for sample exercises) and it eventually went away (probably took less than a month of diligent daily stretches but no change to my running routine). I don't do the stretches anymore but I do try to do strengthening exercises when I do weights as a preventive measure. Good luck! |
I don't think you have PF. I've had it off and on for years. It will hurt to walk when you wake up and the pain is the middle of the heel. |
OP here. Ugh, if not PF, what could this be? Running is way too painful right now. I can walk, but it's rather achey.
I have high arches. The pain is towards the inside, at the point where the heel ends and arch begins. The tender area overlaps both heel and beginning of arch. It's most painful when I stand after sitting for a while. When I move around it gets more tolerable, but definitely not unnoticeable. Yes I know if this persists I'll get it checked out, but I'm in the early Dr. Google/Dr. Internet phase to see if I can get insight before a doctor just tells me to rest. |
NP- I definitely think that's PF!! Mine is right in the middle where my arch and heel hit. You should stop running, start rolling your foot on a ball, more calf stretches (it's really from weak calves) and wear supportive shoes even indoors. Mine is from pregnancy. I've had it for about 8 years. It flares up from time to time, but it's manageable. I don't think it will ever go away. When it's very, very bad I got steroids in my foot and that lasted for years. |
The very first sign I had of PF was a tweaky-type pain that started in my arch when running. I didn’t slow down my practice and eventually it became quite debilitating, with heel pain also in both feet. I eventually got cortisone shots, did light therapy, dry needling, physical therapy… and 6 years later still deal with flare ups.
Hopefully it’s not PF, but definitely rest your feet. Take ibuprofen. Freeze a water bottle and roll the sore spot over that. Stretch your calves. Pay attention to your posture and stride. Good luck. |
What might help is get a hand held roller and roll your calf muscles hard. Stretch your feet. Wear shoes with good arches all the time. |
