I too have had PF before and it never started hurting during a run. It always hurt more in the morning/when not warmed up. It actually always felt fine during a run because things were warmed up which wasn't a good thing because I paid the price later.
This was what it was like for me too. In addition to hurting in the morning and in the beginning of runs (when not as warmed up yet too), by the end of the day after any runs, I'd be limping in pain when I walked. This was fairly recently, less than a year ago. I did not stop running although that's what my doctor told me to do. However, I was very diligent about the stretches (I just googled for sample exercises) and it eventually went away (probably took less than a month of diligent daily stretches but no change to my running routine). I don't do the stretches anymore but I do try to do strengthening exercises when I do weights as a preventive measure. Good luck!
