A good cherry picking example is August haters now agreeing that ECNL rosters almost all now have the same graduating year (a tidbit brought up by a handful of posters over the last year) while not admitting that top teams over roster older players, Jan-July births, to take advantage of the relative age effect. And then not recognizing that the same thing will happen in the fall, teams will pick older players regardless of grade. The difference in the fall is that a bunch won't be in the same grade as others on their team because of state differences in start birthdays, starting school late or early. |
Thats a lot of words for "grade guy was/is right". Justify it however you want. We all know that you'll continue it avoid reality even after rosters are telling you that teams are all the same graduating year this fall. |
The PP makes clear grade year guy is wrong again. It's another example of grade year guy's bias to try to create a system to help his kid by unfairly treating others in a zero sum game. |
| In my area, I've seen both. Kids wanting to play up to stay on grade with parents worried about recruiting. AND I've seen kids now going from a B to an A team even though they're in the higher grade with parents worried about recruiting. The differences between the 2 platforms is stark (regional vs. national). This is at the SAME club. That's what you call case-by-case. And concerns and risks for both are valid. |

My kid wants to step down a league level (From AD to NPL) to do other things but keep playing soccer. His old club he'd want to return to is mandating the age bands (i.e. he can't play "up") so he'd have to drop a level and a year.
This is not super attractive! He'd be on a worse team and not even be with the kids he knows. |
Yeah, that's what the whole myopic grade discussion drowns out -- the age shift in general is stinking for a whole lot of people. |
They are choosing to drop down a level and can switch clubs. There is no problem. |

If you're choosing to play down just play on the B team with players your grade in school. This is what normal people do.
Age guy wants to play down on an A team and be a general pain in the ass for clubs.Theres a reason leagues dont allow playing down. Clubs will remember again to not allow Aug birthdays to play down. Unless they want to play down on a B team. Which people like age guy will never choose. |
The problem is they couldn't stay at their club and play with their friends (thought that was the big promise of this?) |
This is why SO many people criticize you. You want to make his comment about grade. It could be why OR maybe it's not. Honestly, if it were, he probably would have said so. Just let him share HIS story. Don't make everything about your pet issue. |
Its always about grade in school. Ignore it all you want but this is how the world works. - Grade is the reason for switching from BY to SY - Grade is the reason college coaches want all players the same grade per team when recruiting. - Grade is the reason clubs don't want HS players on middle school teams And on and on. |
They have could but choose not too. Not a problem. |
You do know playing up to play with friends isn't an option in DMV so you comment isn't relevant. |
You are arguing for straight grade year again I see. It's still a twelve month window. |
You know a big chunk of players aren't playing HS and playing on their age team makes perfect sense in 9th grade. I could go on an on why all your points have excpetions where flexibility and case-by-case situations are needed and BEING used. |
